2020 Volvo XC90 Interior Review

Interior: 7.5

The 2020 Volvo XC90 has a top-notch interior. The cabin is dressed with high-quality materials, and its styling is elegant without being showy. There’s generous seating space in the first two rows. The third row is tighter but adequate for kids and younger teens. The XC90 has one of the largest cargo holds in the luxury midsize SUV class. Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system is intuitive, though it can be awkward to adjust some functions on the go.

  • "On the inside, the XC90's cabin remains the toast of its segment, with beautiful surfacing, high-quality materials, gorgeous low-gloss wood veneers and a minimalist Scandinavian aura that somehow avoids feeling austere. It's an interior all but unmatched by its peers five model years after its introduction." -- CNET
  • "As standard, the XC90 comes with 3-row/7-passenger seating. Also new for 2020 is the option of 2nd-row captain’s chairs. This reduces total seat count to six, but offers more comfort to those in the middle row, plus easier access to the last row. The third row has decent leg room but is still best suited for children." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "If there is one virtue that the … Volvo XC90 possesses in spades, it's elegance. From the extra classy exterior styling to the impressively well-appointed interior, the XC90 exudes panache. It's a luxury crossover with all the fancy vibes you could ever hope for." -- Edmunds (2018)

This luxury crossover SUV has seven seats in its standard configuration. The available six-seat layout replaces the second-row bench seat with captain’s chairs. The XC90’s first- and second-row seats are very comfortable, and they provide ample headroom and legroom for adults. The third row has adequate room for children and teens, but adults will feel cramped. There are two full sets of LATCH connectors in the second row for securing child car seats.

Standard seating features include synthetic leather upholstery and 10-way power-adjustable front seats. Available seating features include genuine leather, a heated steering wheel, heated second-row seats, and heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats.

  • "Adults won't be happy in the third row, despite the fact that it offers more legroom than similar rivals, but preteens can probably be persuaded, provided the journey is short." -- Car and Driver
  • "Even with three rows of seating, there's still plenty of passenger space. The seats themselves are typically sumptuous and typically Volvo, some of the most comfortable in the business." -- Autotrader (2018)
  • "From the first time you sit down, it's obvious Volvo spent a lot of time on the XC90's seats. They're great. … Tons of thigh adjustment, great lateral support and lots of available lumbar adjustments. … The cabin of the XC90 feels open and spacious. There's plenty of room for driver and passenger, who won't feel cramped. The second row offers good legroom, headroom and width for two adults. The kids-only third-row seat is typical for the segment." -- Edmunds (2018)

Interior Features

The 2020 XC90 comes standard with a 9-inch touch screen, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, two USB ports, Bluetooth, a 10-speaker stereo, satellite radio, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, proximity keyless entry, a hands-free power liftgate, four-zone automatic climate control, and a panoramic moonroof. Available features include an upgraded navigation system, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, and a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

The XC90's Sensus infotainment system has a sleek tabletlike appearance, and it responds promptly to inputs. A few settings, like the seat heating and climate controls, are accessible only via the touch screen. These functions would be easier to adjust with physical buttons and knobs.

The XC90 offers an exceptional array of standard safety features. These include a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, a driver drowsiness monitor, road sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Available safety features include front parking sensors, a surround-view parking camera system, hands-free parking assist, adaptive headlights, and a head-up display.

  • "I really like the tablet-style 9-inch screen and its crisp graphics, but find that some of the deeper menus are distractingly cluttered. Additionally, I wish Volvo hadn't made so many of the climate control system's functions dependent on touchscreen use -- a few more buttons would go a long way. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration come standard and a Wi-Fi hotspot is optional, but oddly for a family-minded vehicle, second- and third-row occupants are still missing USB charging ports." -- CNET
  • "This [Bowers & Wilkins] optional audio system is the epitome of premium sound. With 1,400 watts and 19 speakers it's loud, yes, but the quality is superb, even when playing music files from your phone." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "And the controls are all laid out in a tidy manner; Volvo doesn't go in for clutter." -- Autotrader (2018)

The XC90 has 15.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third-row seats, 41.8 cubic feet with those seats folded, and a maximum of 85.7 cubic feet with all the rear seats folded. That’s a lot more room than most luxury midsize SUVs offer. A hands-free power liftgate is standard.

  • "The XC90's wide, boxy silhouette helps in the cargo-hauling department, but interior compartments aren't as cavernous as in some competitors." -- Car and Driver
  • "[The] cargo area is impressive with seats folded." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "While it isn't necessarily a class leader, the XC90 does well in the utility category. A large cargo storage area, decent tow rating and helpful features make it relatively utilitarian." -- Edmunds (2018)
