2014 Volvo XC90 Overview

Is the 2014 Volvo XC90 a Good Used SUV?

In all likelihood, you can find a used luxury midsize SUV that will better suit your needs than the XC90. The interior is upscale, the seats are comfortable, and the ride is smooth, but the XC90 falls short of rivals in many ways. It has an underpowered engine that uses a lot of gasoline, and there's not much passenger or cargo room.

The XC90's 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine just doesn’t have enough grunt to move around such a heavy vehicle. Acceleration is slow, both at high speeds and when pulling away from a stop. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard, and while it feels refined, it doesn't always downshift quickly enough to give more power when needed. The XC90 only gets 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, which is lower than most rivals’ estimates. Models with all-wheel drive lose 1 mpg in highway driving. The XC90 is clearly tuned for comfortable driving, with relaxed steering and a suspension that soaks up road imperfections. Drivers who prefer crisper cornering should buy an R-Design model, which has a sport-tuned suspension.

The XC90 has a handsome, upscale cabin, with excellent build quality and top-notch materials covering every surface. The front seats are some of the best available in a luxury midsize SUV, providing excellent comfort and support. The second- and third-row seats are a bit cramped, however, and it's difficult to get into the third row. The XC90 has full sets of LATCH child-seat connectors on the second-row outboard seats and an additional upper tether on the second-row middle seat.

The XC90 comes standard with features like dual-zone automatic climate control, rear parking sensors, an eight-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, a USB port, and satellite radio. The physical controls on the dashboard are well-arranged and intuitive to use. Higher trims have an optional infotainment system with navigation. It feels outdated and can be confusing to operate, and the screen is hard to see in bright sunlight. The XC90 has less cargo room behind the third-row seats than some rivals, but with the second- and third-row seats folded flat, overall cargo space is typical for the class.

Should I Consider Another Used XC90?

The 2014 XC90 was the last model year of the previous generation. The model was fully redesigned for 2016. There are very few differences between the 2012, 2013, and 2014 models, so you may be able to find an older XC90 with all the features you want for a lower price.

Which Used Volvo XC90 Is Right for Me?

There are two trims available, 3.2 and R-Design. The 3.2 comes with a long list of features, including dual-zone automatic climate control, rear parking sensors, satellite radio, Bluetooth, a USB port, power-adjustable front seats, and leather upholstery. The R-Design adds a sport-tuned suspension and some unique styling elements. Most buyers should stick with the base 3.2; those who prefer a more dynamic driving feel should go for the R-Design.

Buying an XC90 through a Volvo dealership will open the door to its certified pre-owned program. Volvo provides all certified pre-owned vehicles with a comprehensive warranty good for seven years or 100,000 miles from the new-car purchase date. Each CPO Volvo must pass a 130-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Volvo warranty page carefully.

2014 Volvo XC90 and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Volvo XC90 or 2014 Lexus RX 350?

Unless you need seating for seven, the five-seat Lexus RX 350 is better than the XC90. The RX not only matches the XC90's luxurious cabin, comfortable ride, and top-tier safety scores, it also beats many of the XC90's shortcomings. The Lexus RX gets one of the highest reliability ratings in the class, and its engine has adequate power. Inside, the rear seats offer enough room for adults to get comfortable, and there's generous cargo space. Additionally, there's a long list of advanced safety systems available in the RX that you won't find in the XC90.

Which Is Better: 2014 Volvo XC90 or 2014 Acura MDX?

Neither the XC90 nor the Acura MDX have much passenger space in the second or third rows, and both models have mediocre reliability scores. However, the MDX just edges out the Volvo on a few key points. The MDX has more cargo space whether the seats are up or down, and it has a more potent engine that makes it feel quick. The MDX's fuel economy estimates are better than the XC90's, too. Further, the MDX was fully redesigned for the 2014 model year, so it has fresher styling.

Which Is Better: 2014 Volvo XC90 or 2014 Volvo XC60?

Choosing the XC90's smaller sibling, the Volvo XC60, is a smart move for most buyers. The XC60 doesn't have seven seats or as much cargo space as the XC90, but it is a better SUV overall. The XC60 has more standard features than the XC90, and it's available with more advanced safety features, including lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and low-speed forward collision warning. The XC60 has plenty of passenger room in the front and rear seats, and while its base engine only offers decent power, the optional turbocharged six-cylinder has plenty of punch.
