2009 Volvo XC90 Review

The 2009 Volvo XC90 is a family-friendly SUV with an excellent safety record. While reviewers said the XC90 is an adequate SUV overall, others in the class are simply better.

Pros & Cons

  • Powerful available V8 engine
  • Lots of safety features
  • Comfortable first and second rows
  • Good safety score
  • Tiny third row of seats
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Underpowered base engine
  • Confusing dash controls

2009 Volvo XC90 Overview

Though the 2009 Volvo XC90 ranks near the bottom of its class, test drivers said it’s not a bad SUV. It has a smooth, car-like ride, its interior is fairly well-made and its first two rows of seats are comfortable. True to Volvo’s reputation for safety, the XC90 gets great safety scores and offers lots of safety features, including standard roll stability control and front and rear side curtain airbags.

The Volvo XC90’s main problem is that most other luxury midsize SUVs offer more luxurious cabins with higher-tech features, much better fuel economy and better performance. Test drivers noted that the XC90 had some cheap-feeling interior materials, and that its audio and climate controls weren’t the most intuitive. Plus, the XC90’s third row of seats is only big enough for small kids. With so many areas for improvement, reviewers said that opting for a rival will likely make you happier.

Other Cars to Consider

If you want more luxury in your seven-seat SUV, consider the 2009 Audi Q7. The Q7 has one of the most upscale interiors in its class, and like the Volvo XC90, it offers seating for seven. The Audi Q7 also gets great fuel economy from its new-for-2009 TDI diesel engine. A used Q7 tends to carry a higher price than a used XC90, but if your budget allows, test drivers said you’ll be happier with the Q7 than the XC90.

The 2009 Acura MDX combines good fuel economy, a roomy third row, standard all-wheel drive and an upscale interior. The MDX also gets the same great safety scores as the XC90, and reviewers said the Acura MDX is particularly sporty for a three-row crossover.
