2015 Volvo XC70 Overview

Is the 2015 Volvo XC70 a Good Used Wagon?

The Volvo XC70 isn’t a great option if you’re shopping for a used wagon. The XC70 rates poorly for reliability, its ownership costs are among the highest in its class, and its handling is rather cumbersome. These demerits overshadow the XC70’s highlights, like its upscale cabin and its boxy body style, which gives it generous cargo space.

How Much Does the 2015 Volvo XC70 Cost to Own?

The 2015 Volvo XC70’s five-year costs for gas, insurance, repairs, and maintenance are projected to be about $25,500, or $5,100 per year. That’s above average for a used wagon. In comparison, the 2015 Toyota Prius v costs less than $3,900 per year.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New XC70?

Volvo discontinued the XC70 after the 2016 model year, so you can't buy a Volvo XC70 new. There are still plenty of choices at your local Volvo dealer, from wagons such as the 2020 V60 and 2019 V90, to SUVs such as the 2019 XC60 and 2019 XC90. One option worth considering is the 2020 XC40. This luxury subcompact SUV doesn't have quite the same amount of cargo space as a 2015 XC70, but it is close in price, with a starting MSRP around $33,700.

There are a couple of new cars with starting MSRPs near the 2015 Volvo XC70's average list price of $30,000. Retail prices for the 2019 Subaru Outback start around $26,300, and those for the 2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen are close to $22,000. Although these new wagons aren’t as upscale as the XC70, they have lots of appealing standard features.

Which Model Year of the Volvo XC70 Is Best?

The 2015 XC70 belongs to a generation that spanned the 2008 through 2016 model years. Even in its final years, Volvo continued to update the XC70. For 2014, pedestrian cyclist detection became standard, and Volvo refreshed the styling inside and out. The 2015-and-newer models come standard with a more fuel-efficient T5 Drive-E turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This was the last year that the T6 turbocharged six-cylinder engine was available in the XC70; it was replaced with a turbocharged five-cylinder engine for 2016.

You can save money with older models in this generation, but if you want the better fuel economy of the Drive-E four-cylinder engine, you’ll need to opt for a 2015 or 2016 model.

Which Used Volvo XC70 Is Right for Me?

The 2015 XC70 comes in three trim levels: base, Premier, and Platinum. There are also three powertrain choices. The base setup is the T5 FWD, which consists of a 240-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and eight-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive. The midlevel option is a naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine that's rated at 240-horsepower. At the top is the T6 AWD, which features a 300-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder engine. The two stronger engines come with a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

The XC70's list of standard features includes dual-zone automatic climate control, an infotainment system with a 7-inch display, low-speed automatic emergency braking, cloth upholstery, and power-adjustable front seats.

For the best combination of value and amenities, we recommend the T5 Premier edition. It comes with a lively engine, leather seats, walnut wood trim, a moonroof, and a navigation system.

Certified Pre-Owned Volvo XC70 Warranty

Volvo offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles five years old or less and with fewer than 80,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale’s date. Volvo provides all certified pre-owned vehicles with a comprehensive warranty good for a five-year/unlimited-mile exclusionary coverage from the new-car purchase date. Each CPO Volvo must pass a 170-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Volvo warranty page carefully.

According to our analysis, Volvo has one of the most comprehensive certified pre-owned programs around. Its coverage is more robust than what you'll get with Audi, Volkswagen, or Honda.

2015 Volvo XC70 Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2015 Volvo XC70 or 2015 Audi Allroad?

The 2015 Audi Allroad places in the top third of our wagon rankings, and it proves to be the better vehicle in a number of ways. On the road, the Allroad is comfortable, nimble, and has excellent grip. It boasts a posh interior that's packed with standard features, including a panoramic sunroof, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a power liftgate. The Allroad is also expected to be much more reliable than the XC70. That said, stick with the Volvo if owning a wagon with a lot of muscle under the hood is important to you, as its engine lineup is more powerful than the Audi's.

Which Is Better: 2015 Volvo XC70 or 2015 Subaru Outback?

The 2015 Subaru Outback is less upscale inside as the XC70. It isn't as powerful, either, and its engine can easily feel taxed by a full carload of people. That being said, this Subaru is a better car for most shoppers. It earned our awards for the 2015 Best Wagon for the Money and the 2015 Best Wagon for Families. It's much more affordable as well, with an average list price that's thousands of dollars below that of the Volvo.

2015 XC70 Performance

How Does the 2015 Volvo XC70 Drive?

The 2015 Volvo XC70 has three powertrain options. The T5 FWD model has a 240-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive. The 3.2 AWD model has a six-cylinder engine with 240 horsepower, and the T6 AWD has a turbocharged six-cylinder with 300 horsepower. Both of these models are outfitted with a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Of these three powertrain choices, critics give the most praise to the base T5 FWD and the range-topping T6 AWD. These get the XC70 up to speed quickly, and the T6 is particularly rousing.

On the highway, this Volvo is smooth and stable. Its ride is comfortable, but its handling isn't very athletic or nimble. In this regard, it maneuvers as if it were a sizeable crossover SUV, with a fair amount of body roll on twisty roads.

Does the 2015 Volvo XC70 Get Good Gas Mileage?

The XC70 T5 Drive-E model gets decent fuel economy for a wagon, earning 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. The all-wheel-drive models drop this rating to 17-18 mpg city in the city and 24-25 mpg on the highway.

How Many People Does the 2015 XC70 Seat?

The XC70 seats five and comes standard with cloth upholstery and power-adjustable front seats. All but the base trim level come with leather seats. Other upgrades include heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and two integrated child booster seats.

The XC70's quiet, elegant interior is a pleasant place to spend the day. The front seats are particularly comfortable and offer a commanding view of the road. Long-legged travelers may have a hard time stretching out in the back seat though.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2015 Volvo XC70?

For securing child car seats, the XC70 has two full sets of LATCH connectors.

2015 Volvo XC70 Features

Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control and Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system with a 7-inch display, an eight-speaker audio system, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and a USB port. Available features include a navigation system, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system, proximity keyless entry, and a moonroof.

The XC70's infotainment system is not very user-friendly. It can be challenging to make quick adjustments because the center stack has numerous small buttons. To some, this layout also has a dated appearance.
