2014 Volvo XC70 Overview

Is the 2014 Volvo XC70 a Good Used Wagon?

Despite its impressive cabin, you should consider other wagons over the 2014 Volvo XC70. Several competitors offer engaging performance, better fuel economy, and a modern touch-screen infotainment system – all notable shortcomings in the Volvo. Plus, its cost of ownership is high.

Used 2014 Volvo XC70 Performance and Interior

The front-wheel drive 2014 Volvo XC70 comes with a 240-horsepower, six-cylinder engine that musters decent power for highway driving. An all-wheel-drive model with a 300-horsepower, turbocharged six-cylinder engine is available, and it delivers quicker acceleration from a stop. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. With the base powertrain, the Volvo XC70 gets up to 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, which is below average for a wagon. The 2014 XC70 maintains composure and grip on wet roads, and its ride is comfortable. However, rivals feel more secure through turns.

The five-seat Volvo XC70 has an attractive, well-built cabin that features high-quality materials. The abundance of controls on the dashboard, however, can be overwhelming compared with rivals that use sleek touch screens. The seats have good space and support for most occupants, but taller back-seat riders may wish for more legroom. With the rear seats folded, the Volvo XC70 has one of the largest cargo holds among wagons, measuring 72.1 cubic feet.

Standard features are abundant, including include automatic low-speed pre-collision braking, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, satellite radio, a USB port, and Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system. A moonroof, navigation, a power liftgate, heated front and rear seats, and numerous safety features are available.

How Safe Is the XC70?

The 2014 XC70 has not been evaluated for safety by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Volvo has a reputation for offering vehicles with lots of advanced safety features, and the XC70 is no exception. It comes with Volvo City Safety, which can automatically apply the brakes to prevent a potential low-speed collision. It’s available with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, and a road-sign monitoring system, which can alert the driver if the speed limit is exceeded.

Should I Consider Another Used XC70?

The XC70’s second generation began with the 2014 model and continued through the 2016 model year – the wagon’s final year of production. For 2014, the Volvo XC70’s interior and exterior were refreshed, and pedestrian and cyclist detection were made available. However, if you can do without those updates, consider the 2012 or 2013 XC70, which likely cost less than the 2014 model.

Which Used Volvo XC70 Is Right for Me?

Volvo identifies its cars by powertrain: 3.2 FWD (base), 3.2 AWD, and T6 AWD. The base 3.2 FWD comes with Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system, automatic climate control, Bluetooth, an eight-speaker stereo, satellite radio, and a USB input.

There are three trims to add more features: Premier, Premier Plus, and Platinum. The Premier trim adds a moonroof, leather upholstery, and push-button start. The T6 AWD makes the Premier trim standard, so it provides the best value on top of its satisfying engine. Premier Plus gets you a power liftgate, a rearview camera, and electric folding rear headrests, while Platinum trims add navigation and a premium stereo.

You also have the option to purchase a certified pre-owned Volvo. Volvo provides all CPO vehicles with a comprehensive warranty good for seven years or 100,000 miles from the new-car purchase date. Each CPO Volvo must pass a 130-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Volvo warranty page carefully.

2014 Volvo XC70 and Other Wagons to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Volvo XC70 or 2014 Acura TSX Sport Wagon?

Unless you require a roomy back seat, the Acura TSX Sport Wagon is the way to go. It has far better performance, offering a powerful base engine, a silky transmission, responsive steering, and composed cornering. Additionally, the TSX Sport Wagon is more fuel efficient and has a better reliability rating.

Which Is Better: 2014 Volvo XC70 or 2014 Subaru Outback?

The Subaru Outback – named our 2014 Best Wagon for Families – has plenty to offer, but at a lower price than the XC70. It not only comes standard with all-wheel drive, but it also earns better gas mileage than the XC70. It has about as much cargo space as the XC70, and its seats offer ample head- and legroom in both rows.
