2020 Volvo XC60 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.3

The 2020 Volvo XC60 has arguably the nicest interior in the luxury compact SUV class. From a style perspective, the XC60 keeps things simple and elegant, and there are plenty of premium materials throughout the interior. Both rows of seats are spacious and supremely comfortable, and there are plenty of standard and available tech features. Cargo space is good for the class.

  • "The 2019 XC60's 2-row/5-passenger interior captures the same upscale feel as its bigger brother, the XC90 sport utility, bringing a Scandinavian ethos. A key design touch is the 'ribbon of woodgrain' that flows along the dash." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "The interior is the best part of the XC60. The material usage is excellent, especially in Volvo's choice of a driftwood-like light-grey porous wood for the trim and dash." -- Jalopnik (2018)
  • "Volvo has made quite an effort to dress up its interiors of late, and that's evident in the XC60 – or at least, in the T6 Inscriptions we drove. There are plenty of padded surfaces, lots of nice-looking wood trim, and numerous bright accents that combine to provide a rich ambiance." -- Consumer Guide (2018)

Seating

The XC60 seats five and comes standard with synthetic leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats. Nappa leather upholstery, cloth and leather sport seats, heated front seats, ventilated front seats, massaging front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

The XC60’s seats are a definite highlight. The front seats are some of the most comfortable in the segment, even without swanky upgrades like heating, ventilation, and massage functions. The rear seats impress as well; they're spacious and supportive.

For securing child safety seats, the XC60 has two sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats, as well as an upper tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The hardware is easy to find, but it may be difficult to maneuver around the lower anchors.

  • "… Seating comfort is a strong point of the XC60 thanks largely to soft-padded surfaces and available features such as massaging seats. The four-zone climate control is also a rather luxurious optional feature, and it works well in all four zones (even if it does take a minute to get the coldest of A/C temps going)." -- Edmunds
  • "Seats are top-notch with superior adjustment and support. The rear-seat area is comfortable for three adults, and behind it is a voluminous cargo area." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "The wheelbase stretch pays dividends in rear-seat space, a weak point of the outgoing model. The improvement is tangible; passengers sit on a cushion that's comfortably up off the floor and enjoy generous rear legroom and headroom." -- Car and Driver (2018)

Interior Features

Standard features in the XC60 include dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic moonroof, and the Sensus infotainment system with a vertically oriented 9-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker audio system.

Standard driver assistance features include run-off road mitigation and protection, oncoming lane mitigation, driver drowsiness monitoring, collision mitigation with active braking, traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera. The SUV also includes a system that scans for intersections, cyclists, pedestrians, and large animals.

Available features include a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, proximity keyless entry, quad-zone automatic climate control, and navigation.

Available driver assistance features include blind spot monitoring, rear collision warning with braking, rear cross traffic alert, active park assist, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, distance alert, a head-up display, and a surround-view parking camera system. Also available is Pilot Assist, which controls your speed relative to other vehicles around you and provides steering inputs to keep you centered in your lane.

The infotainment system works pretty well. The large touch screen is easy to read, and it responds quickly to inputs. The only downside is that the touch screen controls almost every function, so adjusting some settings takes multiple steps. This can be a hassle while you're on the move.

  • "Many functions are touchscreen-controlled. And almost everything takes two button presses when one would normally do, and that becomes a hassle when on the move." -- Edmunds
  • "The Sensus system's big screen is integrated into the dash's styling and is quick to act and responsive to touch. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both do a fine job of sending information from your phone to the car's media screen." -- Autoweek (2018)
  • Volvo's Sensus Connect 9.0-inch touchscreen has been slightly tweaked with a larger map for the navigation system, new fonts, and revised menu logic; it looks au courant, and the system is fairly easy to use after a little familiarization. We might prefer a knob for zooming (rather than pinch and pull) as well as physical controls for fan speed and temperature; as it is, the front and rear defrosters are the only HVAC controls with physical buttons. They join the audio system's volume knob and tuning buttons on the minimalist interface." -- Car and Driver (2018)

Cargo

The XC60 has one of the largest cargo holds in the luxury compact SUV class. There’s 22.4 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 63.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. It also gives you an under-floor storage bin in the cargo area and a couple of smaller storage areas under the rear seats. A power liftgate comes standard, and a hands-free power liftgate is available.

  • "The cargo space is usefully large, highlighted by a huge underfloor bin and – on our Inscription, at least – power-folding rear seat backs and hands-free power liftgate." -- Consumer Guide (2018)
  • "There's a pair of smart little cubbies under the rear seats specifically designed to hold tablets, phones, and other electronics, complete with no-slip rubber inside. That's a very good idea. The cargo area is a good size, and the rear seats can be dropped from controls at the rear, which is always a welcome thing, too." -- Jalopnik (2018)
  • "Sadly, that lower height does chew into overall cargo capacity. Although dimensions from floor to seatback are within a cubic-foot from generation to generation, total cargo capacity has been reduced to 63.3 cubic feet from 67.4. That's actually still pretty good for a segment typically in the 50s, but if you're looking to haul bulkier items and stay in the Volvo family, the V90 and XC90 are still the way to go." -- Autoblog (2018)
