2018 Volvo XC60 Interior Review

Interior: 8.8

The interior of the 2018 Volvo XC60 is elegant in a minimalistic way. Few buttons clutter the dash, leaving the large, crisp display screen to take center stage. The seats are spacious and comfortable, and the cargo space ranges from average (with the seats up) to first-rate (with the seats down). For years, Volvo has been synonymous with safety. The XC60 stays true to this brand standard by coming with a full suite of advanced safety equipment, and the option to add even more.

  • "Our Inscription-trim tester came loaded with tech as well delicate Scandinavian-inspired details that would do Gunnar Asplund proud. Straked silver 'driftwood' inlays give a coolness to the interior, flowing across the dashboard within the gentle curves of aluminum brightwork. Even if the outright sumptuousness of the XC90 Inscription and its crystal shift knob isn't quite there, the effect is fully preserved." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "The interior is the best part of the XC60. The material usage is excellent, especially in Volvo's choice of a driftwood-like light-grey porous wood for the trim and dash." -- Jalopnik
  • "Volvo has made quite an effort to dress up its interiors of late, and that's evident in the XC60 – or at least, in the T6 Inscriptions we drove. There are plenty of padded surfaces, lots of nice-looking wood trim, and numerous bright accents that combine to provide a rich ambiance." -- Consumer Guide

The five-seat XC60’s base trim is fitted with leather upholstery, a 10-way adjustable driver's seat, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with controls. Both the front and rear seats are roomy and well-cushioned, and it's easy for most to climb in and out. There is a hump in the floor that takes up some of the middle rear-seat passenger's foot space, but the cabin is otherwise comfortable for everyone. In the back seat of the XC60, there is a full LATCH child-seat system on the outboard seats and a third tether anchor for the middle seat.

Available seating options include thigh cushion extensions for the front seats, a front-seat massage feature, upgraded Nappa leather, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, power-folding second-row seats, and power-folding rear headrests.

  • "The wheelbase stretch pays dividends in rear-seat space, a weak point of the outgoing model. The improvement is tangible; passengers sit on a cushion that's comfortably up off the floor and enjoy generous rear legroom and headroom. Overhead, a panoramic sunroof is standard on all models and helps brighten the interior-too much, perhaps, for those in desert climes, as the mesh sunshade doesn't totally block out the rays (which probably is less of a problem in Sweden)." -- Car and Driver
  • "The additional length in the wheelbase and smart packaging that Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) system provides makes the cabin feel roomier than ever, too, with plenty of legroom in the back and the same, fantastically supportive seats from the rest of the 90 Series range. In fact, Volvo's engineers spent 7 years on the development of these seats alone, longer than the development process for the whole vehicle." -- New York Daily News
  • Head and leg room in front is good rather than great, and our tester had heated and ventilated front seats with massage function, and an extendable driver-seat cushion, all courtesy of the Luxury Seat Package. Room is better in back, where the seats are comfortable and the cushions are quite high, meaning adults don't have to ride knees-up, and entry and exit are fairly easy. However, the center floor hump is quite wide, restricting foot space for a center passenger." -- Consumer Guide

Interior Features

Volvo improves its standard Sensus Connect infotainment system for the 2018 XC60, making it easier to read and navigate through the menus than previous models. The system is pretty straightforward and follows a mild learning curve. The 9-inch touch screen even lets you keep your gloves on.

The XC60 comes standard with 10 speakers, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice commands, Bluetooth, satellite radio, dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic moonroof with power sunshade, and an in-cabin air filtration system. Standard safety equipment includes run-off road mitigation and protection, oncoming lane mitigation, collision mitigation with active braking (with the ability to scan for intersections, cyclists, pedestrians, and large animals), automatic braking after a collision, active high beams, a driver drowsiness monitor, traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera.

There are quite a few interior upgrades you can add as well. To make your ride even cushier or more convenient, Volvo offers quad-zone automatic climate control, navigation, a proximity key, and a 15-speaker Bowers and Wilkins premium sound system. Available safety equipment includes blind spot monitoring with steering assist, a head-up display, rear collision warning with braking, cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, semiautonomous drive, distance alert, front and rear parking sensors, park assist, and a 360-degree camera.

  • "Volvo's Sensus Connect 9.0-inch touchscreen has been slightly tweaked with a larger map for the navigation system, new fonts, and revised menu logic; it looks au courant, and the system is fairly easy to use after a little familiarization. We might prefer a knob for zooming (rather than pinch and pull) as well as physical controls for fan speed and temperature; as it is, the front and rear defrosters are the only HVAC controls with physical buttons. They join the audio system's volume knob and tuning buttons on the minimalist interface." -- Car and Driver
  • "But the biggest upgrade is to the Sensus iPad-look vertical touchscreen. We liked the original in the XC90, but after living with it for a year we had suggestions for improvement. Most of these are incorporated for 2018 across the board-simplified menu structure; bigger, clearer fonts; Apple and Android smartphone integration; and the addition of new native apps such as Wikilocations, Yelp reviews, Glympse location sharing, Tune-In, Pandora, and Spotify." -- Motor Trend
  • "The Sensus system's big screen is integrated into the dash's styling and is quick to act and responsive to touch. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both do a fine job of sending information from your phone to the car's media screen." -- Autoweek

The XC60 has 22.4 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seats (about average among luxury compact SUVs) and 63.3 cubic feet with the seats folded (one of the largest measurements in the class). A power liftgate comes standard, and a hands-free liftgate and power-folding rear seats are available.

  • "The cargo space is usefully large, highlighted by a huge underfloor bin and – on our Inscription, at least – power-folding rear seat backs and hands-free power liftgate." -- Consumer Guide
  • "There's a pair of smart little cubbies under the rear seats specifically designed to hold tablets, phones, and other electronics, complete with no-slip rubber inside. That's a very good idea. The cargo area is a good size, and the rear seats can be dropped from controls at the rear, which is always a welcome thing, too." -- Jalopnik
  • "Sadly, that lower height does chew into overall cargo capacity. Although dimensions from floor to seatback are within a cubic-foot from generation to generation, total cargo capacity has been reduced to 63.3 cubic feet from 67.4. That's actually still pretty good for a segment typically in the 50s, but if you're looking to haul bulkier items and stay in the Volvo family, the V90 and XC90 are still the way to go." -- Autoblog
