2016 Volvo XC60 Review

The 2016 Volvo XC60's cargo space, comfort, and safety features make it a great choice for a family vehicle. That said, its reliability rating is below average, which is partly why this SUV scores in the bottom third of our rankings.

Pros & Cons

  • Supreme seating comfort
  • Best-in-class cargo space
  • Powerful engine options
  • Supple ride quality
  • Below-average reliability rating

2016 Volvo XC60 Overview

Is the 2016 Volvo XC60 a Good Used SUV?

For the most part, the 2016 XC60 is a good used SUV. It has a smooth ride and good overall performance thanks to several powerful engine options. The XC60's elegant interior, ample passenger room, and class-leading cargo space also make it a comfortable daily driver. Its Achilles' heel is its below-average reliability rating.

How Much Does the 2016 Volvo XC60 Cost to Own?

Plan on spending about $25,300 over the course of five years to insure, fuel, maintain, and repair a used 2016 XC60. These ownership costs are much lower than what you'll spend on many other luxury compact SUVs. For example, you'll pay an additional $4,800 on these expenses with a 2016 Audi Q5, and the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC will cost you an extra $8,200.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New XC60?

The 2018 XC60 – which has been fully redesigned – is a much better SUV than the 2016 XC60. For starters, an impressive amount of safety equipment is standard, including high-tech systems such as collision mitigation with active braking, oncoming lane mitigation, and equipment that scans for cyclists, pedestrians, and large animals. More tech features – including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – are also included. Volvo's new powertrains gain horsepower without sacrificing fuel efficiency. An added benefit of the extra power is that the 2018 XC60 can tow up to 5,291 pounds – a remarkable improvement from the 2016 XC60's 3,500-pound tow rating. The catch here is the price tag. The 2018 XC60 has a starting MSRP of $41,500 – well above the 2016 XC60's average price of $32,500. You may be able to slim down the cost of a new XC60 somewhat by taking advantage of current Volvo deals.

If a new XC60 is out of your budget, there are a few other alternatives you can consider. The 2018 Lincoln MKC ($33,355) is one of the least expensive compact SUVs from a luxury nameplate. While this SUV isn't as well-rounded as the 2018 XC60, it's very comfortable, comes packed with lots of features, and has a history of above-average reliability. Another option is to select the mid- or top-level trim of an affordable model, like the 2018 Honda CR-V or Volkswagen Tiguan. For around the same price as a 2016 XC60, you can get a well-equipped CR-V or Tiguan that includes upscale goodies like leather seats, a navigation system, and a panoramic sunroof.

Which Model Year of the Volvo XC60 Is Best?

The 2016 XC60 is part of a generation that began with the 2010 model and concludes with the 2017 model year. The redesigned 2018 XC60 marks the beginning of a new generation.

You can likely save money – and get a very similar SUV – by shopping for an older model in the same generation as the 2016 XC60. There have been slight changes to the powertrain over the last few model years, and an infotainment system became standard with the 2015.5 model. Otherwise, the XC60 remains mostly unchanged when it comes to features and ratings.

Which Used Volvo XC60 Model Is Right for Me?

The 2016 Volvo XC60 is available with T5 and T6 powertrains and in base, Premier, and Platinum trims. All-wheel drive is available; front-wheel drive is standard. A standard XC60 comes with attractive features like an infotainment system, satellite radio, and safety tech, but you'll want to look for a Premier model for leather seats and navigation. The T5's base engine is quite potent, so don't worry about finding a more powerful model.

Certified Pre-Owned Volvo XC60 Warranty

Given the XC60’s low reliability rating, you may want to consider shopping for a certified pre-owned model. Volvo provides all certified pre-owned vehicles with a comprehensive warranty good for seven years or 100,000 miles from the new-car purchase date. Each CPO Volvo must pass a 130-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Volvo warranty page carefully. The model's original sale date determines whether it is eligible for the CPO program. Overall, this coverage isn't quite as robust as CPO programs from Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.

Other available safety features include front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and a driver alertness monitor.

2016 Volvo XC60 Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2016 Volvo XC60 or 2016 Acura RDX?

The 2016 Acura RDX rivals the 2016 XC60 in terms of safety and select ownership costs. Both cars offer ample passenger space and classy cabins, but the XC60 has superior ride quality and an easier to use infotainment system. On the other hand, the RDX has a slightly higher reliability rating. In the end, both models are a good choice.

Which Is Better: 2016 Volvo XC60 or 2016 Audi Q5?

The 2016 Audi Q5 delivers a thrilling driving experience and offers a tempting selection of powerful engines. However, the XC60 is the more sensible choice, with higher safety and expected reliability ratings. You'll also spend significantly less to maintain, fuel, insure, and repair the XC60 than you will the Q5.

Which Is Better: 2016 Volvo XC60 or 2016 Volvo XC90?

Volvo's flagship luxury midsize SUV, the XC90, was fully redesigned for 2016. It earned high praise when it debuted for its comfort and interior quality. That's one of the few advantages a used 2016 Volvo XC90 has over its smaller sibling. It's a good choice if you need seating for seven (both 2-row and 3-row XC90s are available), but it is more expensive to buy (by about $12,000, on average) and own. If the XC90 doesn't fit into your budget, it's fine to stick with the compact XC60.
