2013 Volvo XC60 Overview

Is the 2013 Volvo XC60 a Good Used SUV?

The 2013 Volvo XC60 is a fine option for those shopping for a used luxury compact SUV. It offers a comfortable and roomy interior, refined handling, and an exceptional list of available safety features. Also, low-speed forward collision warning is standard. That said, this is a very competitive class of cars. The XC60 trails rivals like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 in reliability. Give these top-rated SUVs a look before deciding on the Volvo.

Used 2013 Volvo XC60 Performance and Interior

The Volvo XC60 is available with two engine options. Models with a 3.2 designation have a six-cylinder engine with 240 horsepower, which struggles to get the SUV up to speed with urgency. The T6 and R-Design models have a turbocharged six-cylinder that is tuned to 300- and 325-horsepower, respectively. Either version of this engine is a far better match for the SUV than the base power plant. The six-cylinder offers strong acceleration at city speeds, robust passing power on the highway, and decent fuel economy of 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The XC60 3.2 gets 19/25 mpg city/highway.

A six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive (AWD) are standard; front-wheel drive is available on 3.2 models only.

The XC60 rides comfortably on most road surfaces, and its pliant suspension manages to keep the SUV stable around tight turns. The R-Design models have a stiffer sport-tuned suspension, which reduces ride quality without any substantial handling benefits. The XC60 can tow up to 3,300 pounds, when properly equipped.

The Volvo XC60 seats five. Its hushed cabin lets in very little road or wind noise, even at higher speeds. The front seats are comfortable and provide excellent support. The rear seats are cozy as well, and there’s generous seating space in both rows. However, taller adults may find leg room a bit confining. There are two full sets of LATCH connectors for securing child car seats. The XC60’s tall ride height and large windows enable great front, side, and rear visibility. The XC60 has 30.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats and 67.4 cubic feet with these seats folded flat. That’s very roomy by class standards, and it’s just 4.7 cubic feet shy of the larger Volvo XC70 wagon.

The XC60’s cabin showcases handsome styling and quality materials. The dashboard looks nice, thanks to its brushed aluminum center stack and minimalist design. The climate control buttons are large and fairly user friendly. The audio and Sensus infotainment controls aren’t very easy to use, however. Many of the buttons are small and closely arranged. The main infotainment control knob also feels awkwardly placed on the dashboard.

2013 Volvo XC60 and Other SUVs to Consider

Which Is Better: 2013 Volvo XC60 or 2013 Audi Q5?

We named the Audi Q5 the 2013 Best Luxury Compact SUV for Families. It tops the Volvo with better reliability ratings, a richer interior, sportier handling, and better fuel economy (up to 24/30 mpg). Both SUVs offer similar seating space and a long list of safety features, though the XC60 has a roomier cargo area. You’re apt to spend a bit more on a used Q5, but it’s the better luxury vehicle.

Which Is Better: 2013 Volvo XC60 or 2013 BMW X3?

The BMW X3 is a great option. It rates well for reliability, offers better fuel economy (21/28 mpg), and feels a bit more fun to drive than the Volvo. Both SUVs have comparable seating and cargo space, and offer upscale – but not extravagant – cabin styling and materials. Both models typically fall within the same price range as well. That said, the Volvo has more advanced safety features like forward collision warning. If you desire this technology, go with the XC60. Otherwise, the X3 is the better overall pick.
