2018 Volvo V90 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2018 Volvo V90 was new.

Interior: 8.3

The new 2018 Volvo V90 has an upscale interior with premium materials and a simple yet elegant design. Front and rear seats provide plenty of room and comfort for all occupants. The infotainment system functions well and is attractively modern, but the V90 has less cargo space than its competitors.

  • "The V90 concedes nothing to its rivals in cabin design and materials. This is a first-rate interior all around, from upholstery, touch points and surfaces, and infotainment integration." -- Edmunds
  • "Once synonymous with '3-box design' (literally), Volvo builds sleeker machines now. Still, the new V90 wagon (and the S90 sedan on which it is based) represents the first execution of Volvo's modern design language that can be legitimately referred to as sexy. In my opinion, the Volvo V90 is the first wagon since the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake to make my skin tingle. The same can be said about the V90's interior, which is sumptuous to a fault and as comfortable as it is refined. Sharing many of its sweeping and minimalist design cues with the venerated XC90 SUV, the V90 feels cozier inside. Sincerely, you'll need to sit in the V90 for yourself and experience first-hand the cosseting touches and attention to detail that elevate the form. … There are no frivolous details here, and both fit and finish are beyond reproach. Think of the V90's passenger compartment as less of a cabin, and more of a lavishly appointed living room that you can actually take with you on the road." -- New York Daily News
  • "The V90 Cross Country we drove had dark walnut open pore trim on the dash door, which is not easily recognizable as wood, especially after we had fallen in love with lighter, open pore woods in the XC90. The other choices include aluminum or flame birch with a grain native to the Swedish tree, and it is heavily lacquered. The detail-oriented will notice the Cross Country has unique pearl stitching, a combination thicker-thinner stitch designed to appear a bit more elegant." -- Motor Trend

The V90 seats five on standard leather upholstery, with 14-way power-adjustable front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a leather-wrapped shift knob. Optional upgrades include full Nappa leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, massaging front seats, and a heated steering wheel. There are two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors, with a top-tether anchor for the middle seat.

All of the V90’s seats are incredibly comfortable and supportive, with a wealth of adjustments available. There is good forward visibility, and it’s easy to get into the front seats. The back seat has ample head- and legroom for adult passengers.

  • "The seats are comfortable and supportive, and the view from the driver's seat is enhanced thanks to the slightly higher seating position when compared to the S90 sedan. There's also a large, panoramic sunroof that helps give the interior a light, airy feel." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "By that same token, good luck finding a reason to peel yourself out of the V90 T6 Inscription model's seats, which heat, cool, massage, adjust infinitely, and are love at first touch. … Besides, the V90's rear seat is truly quite amazing. Really. Anyone sitting back there will enjoy abundant headroom and legroom, as well as the seat comfort levels for which Volvo is long known." -- New York Daily News
  • "Easy enough to enter and exit the front seats, with a wide door swing and aperture. The sloping rear roofline means taller passengers might need to stoop slightly to get into the rear seats. The steering column has manual tilt-and-telescoping, though it should be power-adjustable at this price. There's no trouble finding a good position for a 5-foot-10 driver, and we wouldn't anticipate trouble for taller or shorter drivers. Just shy of 36 inches rear legroom, enough for a 6-foot passenger seated behind a 6-foot driver. Plenty of shoulder room and hiproom front and rear." -- Edmunds

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2018 V90 include quad-zone automatic climate control, two USB ports, Bluetooth, navigation, satellite radio, the Sensus infotainment system, a 10-speaker sound system, a panoramic moonroof, proximity key entry, a hands-free power liftgate, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, the Pilot Assist semiautonomous driving system, adaptive headlights, and road-sign recognition.

Optional features include a 360-degree camera, heated windshield washer nozzles, a universal garage-door opener, automatic Park Assist Pilot, a heated windshield, a 110-volt power outlet, a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system, a head-up display, a dual-screen rear-seat DVD entertainment system, rear-window sun curtains, and leather-wrapped dashboard and door panels.

The V90’s standard infotainment system features a sharp display in a vertical tabletlike layout that also incorporates functions like pinching to zoom and swiping. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also included. The touch screen responds well to inputs, but it may take you some time to find all the features within its menus.

  • "Usual Volvo control quirks (e.g., button with an arrow-tipped open circle and '+' symbol inside indicates both set cruise and increase speed). But the touchscreen is intuitive and it's easy to access primary nav, phone, audio and climate functions." -- Edmunds
  • "… the large vertical center touch screen has the same touch/swipe/pinch-control strategy familiar to anyone with a computer tablet." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "… the centers of attention are the tablet-style Sensus infotainment system and otherworldly-good Bowers and Wilkins premium audio system. … The only downside to the clutter-free interior is, much like the outcome of a day of spring cleaning, finding all of the features and functions that are untidily buried within the infotainment system. It takes more than a few minutes to get used to swiping left and right to find the intended function, unless you default to using the optional Apple CarPlay interface. In refining this system, Volvo could take a lesson from the nascent emoji movement." -- New York Daily News

The 2018 V90 has 19.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats and 54 cubic feet with the seats folded down. Those values are less than those of rivals, but the cargo area is open and easy to load. A hands-free power liftgate is standard.

  • "At 54 cubic feet, the Volvo V90 has much more cargo volume than the sedan. And with fold-down seats, grocery bag hooks and cargo tie-down points in the cargo floor, the V90 is much more cargo-friendly, too." -- Edmunds
  • "In the case of the Volvo V90, an expansive and comfortable rear passenger compartment comes at the expense of cargo space. Behind the rear seats, just 19.7 cubic feet of trunk room, about as much as a Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon offers but at the same time measuring just two cubes more than the S90 sedan's trunk will accommodate. Fold the V90's rear seats down, and capacity increases to 53.9 cu.-ft., significantly more than the S90 but about 30 cu.-ft. less than what the XC90 SUV offers. Disappointing? Only kinda sorta. The numbers tell only part of the story, as the ease of accessing and filling the cargo area through the power-operated rear liftgate comes at no expense to the V90's willowy silhouette." -- New York Daily News
  • "The main value of the wagon, of course, is utility, and the V90 delivers, with about two cubic feet more carrying capacity behind the rear seat than the S90 has in its trunk and an additional 34 cubic feet when you fold the rear seat's backrest." -- Car and Driver
