2015 Volvo V60 Performance Review

Note: This performance review was created when the 2015 Volvo V60 was new.

Performance: 7.9

Reviewers are impressed with the power the 2015 Volvo V60’s base turbocharged four-cylinder engine provides, especially from a stop. They say all V60 models have a comfortable ride and fairly agile handling.

  • "This wagon looks lean and mean, and thanks to a new turbocharged 4-cylinder engine under the hood, it is." -- AutoTrader
  • "Driving the V60 T5 AWD feels consistent with the Volvo ride quality I've come to love. It has just the right balance of a connected feel to the road without an overly tight suspension and an overabundance of road feel. I don't want to feel every single nook and cranny in the road - rather, just enough to be in tune to the driving experience while still being comfortable." -- Cars.com
  • "The new Drive-E engines are world-class and might make you think you've skipped ahead a few years to a cleaner, easier-living future." -- Motor Trend
  • "The V60 is no supermodel when it comes to weight, but it was surprisingly well-balanced around corners and more in line with the sporty sedans and wagons it hopes to compete with." -- Jalopnik

Acceleration and Power

The base 2015 Volvo V60 T5 Drive-E FWD has a 240-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The T5 AWD comes with a 250-horsepower, turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The T6 AWD R-Design comes with a 325-horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The T5 Drive-E FWD gets an EPA-estimated 25/37 mpg city/highway, which is excellent for a wagon.

Most test drivers reviewed the turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the base T5 Drive-E FWD, and most say it is smooth, powerful and provides immediate, strong acceleration from a stop. They write that the five-cylinder engine in the T5 AWD model is not as smooth. Automotive journalists praise the smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission.

  • "Power comes on low in the rpm band despite the turbocharger needing time to spool up, and the 8-speed automatic allows for smooth and linear power progression right up to redline." -- AutoTrader
  • "Acceleration is quick, with plenty of oomph at the low end." -- Motor Trend
  • "The V60 lets loose right off the throttle with no sacrifices. Granted, we're not talking true sports-car acceleration here; it's still fairly conservative for Volvo's bread-and-butter audience. But a thrill-seeker won't be disappointed." -- Jalopnik
  • Volvo's new engine design is no joke, offering up very good power and fuel economy, but with a level of smoothness and refinement that's lacking in Volvo's 5-cylinder engine." -- Kelley Blue Book

Handling and Braking

The 2015 Volvo V60 T5 Drive-E FWD and T5 AWD models are available with a sport chassis. The T6 AWD R-Design comes standard with an R-Design sport chassis. Whether or not the V60 is equipped with the sport chassis, reviewers say it has a comfortable ride and strong brakes. They note that the V60’s steering system is accurate, and most think it provides decent feedback. Reviewers say that the V60 handles well with minimal body lean during cornering, especially with the sport chassis.

  • "When equipped with the Sport package, its suspension absorbs rough patches, while still controlling body lean in sharp corners. … Other packages put a premium on luxury, but all V60s offer up precise steering, good brakes and excellent seats." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "This car is vastly more comfortable than you'd expect, even as it delivers good grip at high speeds and also offers a standard torque-vectoring function in the front differential to mitigate understeer. Even the electric-assist steering has the same feel we've experienced in the BMW M235i - resolutely numb, to be sure, yet with a sure sense of on-center stability, so you always feel like the car knows where it's going." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "On the road, the V60 is a smooth operator, absorbing most bumps and blemishes without numbing the ride completely. A stiff body, nicely weighted steering wheel and well-heeled suspension hit the sweet spot between sporty driving and comfortable ride." -- AutoTrader
  • "Steering was not overly assisted but could be adjusted to a driver's taste through menu settings on the seven-inch display. We found a firm ride that exhibited good road-going manners and managed to corner flatly, but overall offered little in the way of feedback. Still, it's a ride that will satisfy most Volvo owners." -- Left Lane News
