2010 Volvo V50 Overview

A five-cylinder engine, automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard on the 2010 Volvo V50. Models with this powertrain configuration get 20/31 mpg city/highway. On higher trims, the V50 is fitted with a turbocharged five-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive. New for 2010, the higher trim comes standard with a manual transmission, but an automatic was still available. Test drivers found the base engine to be adequate, but for more power, they suggested the turbocharged five-cylinder. There is a sportier suspension that was offered on the V50 to improve handling, but many reviewers noted that it was more uncomfortable when the V50 ran over bumps.

Reviewers commented that the interior in the V50 is made of high-quality materials. They added that the seats are comfy; however, seating for five will be a tight fit due to the wagon’s narrowness. The V50 has 27.4 cubic feet cargo space behind the second row, which is less than the cargo space in most of its competitors. The V50’s long list of standard features include an auxiliary  input jack, electronic climate control, power driver’s seat with lumbar support, six-disc CD sound system, Bluetooth and satellite radio. Rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated front seats, a 12-speaker sound system, a navigation system and leather upholstery were optional when the V50 was new.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2010 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen features more passenger space than the V50, but has comparable fuel economy with its base engine. The Jetta SportWagen’s available diesel engine gets higher fuel economy ratings, plus reviewers said its handling and power aren’t bad either.

The 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour has available all-wheel drive, a long list of standard features and a high safety score, which make it a strong alternative to the V50.
