2017 Volvo S90 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2017 Volvo S90 was new.

Interior: 8.9

The 2017 Volvo S90’s interior impresses with a simple but beautiful design. Upscale trimmings like wood accents and real leather make the cabin elegant. Seating is comfortable in all positions, and there is plenty of room for all passengers. Cargo space is large compared to rivals. The infotainment system operates smoothly and is user-friendly.

  • "Inside the S90 is a fantastic place to be, with buttery-smooth leather, beautiful texturing and contrast, and fantastic wood trim. It's readily apparent that Volvo's interior designer honed his chops working for Bentley." -- Motor Trend
  • "Slide into the 2017 Volvo S90's seats and you're immersed in an elegant, minimalist cabin that rivals anything from its German contemporaries. This new interior, with its wood inlays and chrome and metal accents wrapping from door to door across the dash, is arguably the S90's greatest leap from its comparatively tepid predecessor." -- Edmunds
  • "There are differences inside, too--familial similarities with the frequently praised XC90, yes, but details that are the S90's alone. It's dashboard has more depth, taller vertical vents on either side of the tablet-style center display, diamond-knurl knobs, hand stitching on the leather dash and door panels, even larger swathes of wood trim, a bright aluminum structural element rimming the bottom of the dash and Volvo's first adjustable side bolsters and seat-bottom length. Volvo calls it a Scandinavian sanctuary. We'd call it pretty darn nice." -- Autoweek

The 2017 S90 seats five on standard leather seating, with power-adjustable front seats, driver's seat memory settings, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Optional seating features include Nappa leather, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and power front-seat bolsters and cushion extenders.

Passenger space in the S90 is excellent all over, with ample headroom in both rows and enough space for adults in the rear. Rear legroom is even sufficient for taller people. All of the seats are supportive and deliver outstanding comfort.

The S90 has LATCH child-seat connectors on the rear outboard seats, which haven’t been officially evaluated for ease of use yet. The lower anchors are behind plastic covers near the bottom of the seat, so they should be easy to access and maneuver around to attach the seat straps.

  • "As the larger of two Volvo sedans in the premium-midsize field—the other being the S60—the S90 also comes with the luxury of added room. This is especially noticeable in the back seat, where adults will fit comfortably-and may even accommodate a third passenger in the middle once arrangements are made for everyone's feet around the floor tunnel. Headroom is good in either row." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The S90's seats are some of the best in the business, wrapped in fine material regardless of trim level, with support and adjustments suited for extended periods of driving. With 36 inches of legroom, the rear seat of the S90 offers plenty of room for an average-size adult sitting behind a 6-foot driver." -- Edmunds
  • "Its rear seat might be the most comfortable. There's adequate leg- and headroom when six-footers sit in tandem, and the rear outboard seats cup and support." -- Autoweek

Interior Features

Standard features include a moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 10-speaker audio system, a USB port, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, HD Radio, satellite radio, an 8-inch instrument cluster display, Volvo's Sensus infotainment system, navigation, a 9-inch touch-screen display, voice command activation, proximity key entry, keyless ignition, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, automatic high beams, forward collision warning, low-speed automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, a driver attention monitor, rear collision warning, road sign recognition, and the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system.

Optional features include leather-wrapped dashboard and door panels, quad-zone automatic climate control, a heated windshield, a remote garage door opener, a power trunk, a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay, a head-up display, auto-dimming mirrors, an adjustable air suspension, adaptive headlights, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, a 360-degree surround-view camera, and automatic parking assist.

The standard infotainment system controls most of the car’s functions and is easy to use, though some reviewers note that some controls require multiple swipes into menus, which can be distracting while driving. It employs familiar smartphone gestures like swiping and pinch zooming. The vertical orientation of the screen also gives the S90’s dashboard a unique appearance.

  • "General driving controls are legible and easy to operate. As for the all-encompassing center screen, it can be a mixed blessing. Large and vertical (almost like a printed page), its menus are accessed by finger taps on areas for navigation, audio, telephone, and apps. Once in any of these areas, however, swiping left or right accesses deeper information and/or control. Some of the main screens present a lot of potential choices for a driver to activate depending on his needs, so maybe it's a good thing the car is automatically looking out for large animals-like Impalas and Jaguars." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Volvo's Sensus system operates in a very familiar fashion, with pinch-and-pull zooming, swiping and other functions that will be intuitive for smartphone users. The display contents are easily customized and reward users who are willing to invest a little setup time." -- Autotrader
  • "Volvo's Tesla-like Sensus infotainment system is stellar, with crisp graphics and snappy response." -- Motor Trend

The 2017 S90 has 17.7 cubic feet of trunk space, which is among the largest in the class. The second row folds down in a 60/40 split. Though the opening is narrow, the trunk is lengthy and folding the seat results in a near-flat surface.

  • "At 17.7 cubic feet, the S90's trunk offers 4.6 cubic feet more space than that in the E-Class, and it's one of the largest in the category." -- Autoweek
  • "While the trunk is somewhat narrow at the back, it does extend far forward, so overall capacity is fairly generous. A slight rise in the trunk floor helps smooth the transition to the fold-down rear seats. There's also a pass-through door in the rear seat back, albeit with a release on the back of the door. The trunk is so long that you won't reach it that way, so one of the seat-back sections has to be lowered in order to access the release." -- Consumer Guide
  • "The S90 also offers a generous 17.7 cubic inches (sic) of trunk space, one of the largest cargo holds in the class." -- Edmunds
