2015 Volvo S80 Overview

Is the 2015 Volvo S80 a Good Used Car?

Volvo's flagship sedan lacks the elegance, sporty driving dynamics, and cavernous interiors found in other luxury midsize cars. However, the S80 has excellent safety scores and reasonable ownership costs.

Used 2015 Volvo S80 Performance and Interior

The 2015 Volvo S80 is available with T5 and T6 powertrains. The standard T5 comes with a 240-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. An eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are also standard. The T6 has all-wheel drive and a 300-horsepower, turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine and an automatic six-speed transmission. Both setups deliver potent power for most situations, and the larger six-cylinder holds its own against other performance-oriented sedans in the class. Standard fuel economy with the T5 is excellent for the class, at 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. The six-cylinder engine gets good mileage as well, at 19/28 mpg city/highway.

Though it has solid muscle under the hood, the S80 lacks engaging handling. However, it has a soft and supple ride quality.

The Volvo S80 seats five on standard leather upholstery. Heated front and rear seats, ventilated front seats, and premium leather are available. The front seats offer all-day comfort, but some competitors offer more legroom in the back. There are two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors in the rear outboard seats and a tether-only connection in the middle seat.

The S80 delights with its high-quality cabin materials. When matched against some competitors, however, the car's minimalist design can seem dated.

Standard features in the 2015 S80 include dual-zone automatic climate control, a moonroof, satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth, a USB port, and Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system, which includes a 7-inch touch screen. Physical knobs on the center stack control most of the car's functions, and while temperature adjustments are easy, audio controls are small and hard to use while driving. Other available features include a rearview camera, parking sensors, a premium Harman Kardon audio system, and navigation.

How Reliable Is the 2015 Volvo S80?

J.D. Power and Associates gives the 2015 S80 a predicted reliability score of three out of five. Though that's an average rating among all vehicles, it's low for a luxury midsize sedan.

Should I Consider Another Used S80?

The 2015 Volvo S80 is part of the car's second and final generation, which spans the 2007 through 2016 model years. The end of this generation saw a number of significant changes, including refreshed interior and exterior styling for 2014, a new engine for 2015, and a midyear 2015.5 model that rearranged feature availability and made navigation standard. You might be able to save money by purchasing an older model, but you'll miss some notable improvements.

Which Used Volvo S80 Is Right for Me?

The 2015 Volvo S80 is available in base, Premier Plus, and Platinum trim levels, with a T5 or T6 powertrain designation. The midrange Premier Plus model offers the best value. It adds convenience features like a rearview camera and parking sensors, which don't come in the base model. Features like heated seats and advanced safety technologies were part of optional packages when the S80 was new, so you may want to look for amenities like those as well.

You might also want to consider a certified pre-owned S80. Volvo provides all certified pre-owned vehicles with a comprehensive warranty good for seven years or 100,000 miles from the new-car purchase date. Each CPO Volvo must pass a 130-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Volvo warranty page carefully.

2015 Volvo S80 and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2015 Volvo S80 or 2015 Volvo S60?

The 2015 Volvo S60 is a luxury compact car so its back seat offers less passenger room than the S80's. Aside from that, the S60 is a slightly better car. It has a better predicted reliability score and should cost you less to purchase and own. Though it's not sporty, the S60's balanced handling and ample engine power provide better performance than its larger sibling. For the money, the smaller S60 is a better choice.

Which Is Better: 2015 Volvo S80 or 2015 Audi A6?

The 2015 Audi A6 is one of the most fun-to-drive cars in the segment, and it outshines the S80 with its sleek and elegant interior, highlighted by an intuitive infotainment system. Average purchase and ownership costs are higher with the Audi, but it's is expected to be more reliable than the S80, so it's probably worth it.

Which Is Better: 2015 Volvo S80 or 2015 BMW 5 Series?

Like the S80, the 2015 BMW 5 Series boasts strong engine options but prioritizes ride comfort over athletic corner-carving abilities. Although the 5 Series has a quality cabin, it's not as refined as you would expect from a luxury car. Its ownership costs are also among the highest in the class. Neither of these vehicles is a standout among luxury midsize cars, but you can save some money by going with the Volvo.
