2015 Volvo S80 Overview

Is the 2015 Volvo S80 a Good Used Car?

The 2015 S80 is a decent used luxury midsize car. Its cushioned ride and supple seats make it comfortable to drive, and it gets great fuel economy for the class. Additionally, the S80 boasts excellent safety scores. That said, this Volvo ranks low in the segment for a reason. Though decent, its reliability rating is worse than that of class rivals, its handling is dull, and its audio controls are small.

Which Model Year of the Volvo S80 Is Best?

The 2015 S80 is part of a generation that launched for the 2007 model year and ended with the 2016 S80. Until the 2012 model year, only minor changes were made to the S80. For 2012, Volvo introduced the Premier Plus and Platinum trims, made the infotainment system and the City Safety low-speed braking system standard, and updated the available navigation system. There were no big changes for the 2013 or 2014 model years.

A new standard powertrain was added to the 2015 S80, and a midyear refresh (2015.5) saw Volvo discontinue the Premium Plus trim and reshuffle its features list. Navigation was also made standard. For 2016, the previously available six-cylinder engine (T6) and all-wheel drive were discontinued.

Stick with the 2015 model if you want a more fuel-efficient base engine than what was available in older models. You might also consider a 2012 S80, which offers a similar list of features and likely costs less.

2015 Volvo S80 Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2015 Volvo S80 or 2015 Volvo S60?

The 2015 Volvo S60 is a luxury small car that compares well with the S80. It has less passenger space than its stablemate, but it offers plenty of available safety features, including blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. It also boasts superb safety scores. The S60 doesn’t suffer from lackluster handling like the S80 does. The S60 features great fuel economy, and its top-of-the-line six-cylinder engine has more horsepower than the S80's, Factor in the S60's lower average list price, and it's also a better value than the S80.

Which Is Better: 2015 Volvo S80 or 2015 Audi A6?

The 2015 Audi A6 is superior to the S80 from both a performance and comfort standpoint. The A6 has poised handling, a composed ride, and a powerful lineup of engines, including a potent available V8, which you can't get in the S80. The A6 has more rear-seat legroom than the S80, as well as high-end materials like standard wood and metal trim pieces, heated front seats, and leather upholstery. The A6 has a higher average list price than the S80, but if you can stretch your budget, it's worth it.

Both the T5’s eight-speed automatic transmission and the T6’s six-speed automatic deliver quick shifts and pair well with their respective engines.

The S80 has a smooth ride but numb handling. Some T6 models may feature an available sport suspension that improves handling, but ride quality is still compromised. Many competitors offer more engaging rides.
