2014 Volvo S80 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2014 Volvo S80 was new.

Interior: 7.8

The 2014 Volvo S80’s last full redesign was for model year 2007, and some critics say its interior controls and infotainment system graphics look dated compared to those of its rivals. However, most are pleased with the S80’s tasteful, low-key interior design, high-quality interior materials, tremendously comfortable front seats and wide array of optional, cutting-edge safety features.

  • "The S80's interior is understated and classy, with top-notch materials all around, a sleek center panel with sensible controls (including Volvo's unique humanoid diagram for airflow control) and a generally luxurious vibe that speaks well of Volvo's attention to detail." -- AutoTrader
  • "As you'd expect of a Swedish-designed car, the 2014 Volvo S80's 5-passenger cabin is straightforward and functional." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "This is not to say the 2014 S80 is undesirable, but there's no denying the current car is showing its age. This is especially evident in the cabin, where the control layout looks dated and the available navigation system lags behind competitors' systems in its graphics, processing power and outright functionality. On the other hand, Volvo's flagship luxury sedan still provides clean, understated styling, exceptionally comfortable seats, plenty of standard features and, of course, the latest safety advances." -- Edmunds
  • "Materials and execution are generally pleasing throughout, with only hard plastic lining the very bottom portion of the center console." -- Left Lane News (2013 T6 AWD)

The 2014 S80 seats five and comes standard with leather upholstery and eight-way, power-adjustable front seats. Heated front and rear seats, ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel are available. Reviewers agree that the S80’s front seats are among the most supportive and comfortable on the market. Test drivers say the rear seats in the S80 are smaller than those in other luxury large cars, though are still comfortable.

  • "The big Volvo's interior is also worthy of praise, with some of the most comfortable and supportive front seats in the business." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "The front seats are wonderful, providing drive-all-day comfort to a degree that few others can match. While the back seat isn't as huge as that of other flagship sedans, there's considerably more rear passenger space than in the S60 and its rivals." -- AutoTrader
  • "The front seats are especially comfortable, and the backseat, while not exactly spacious, can handle a couple of average-size adults with few complaints." -- Edmunds
  • "Rear seat riders don't get acres of leg room, but they do get their own butt warmers." -- Left Lane News (2013 T6 AWD with optional heated rear seats)

Interior Features

The 2014 Volvo S80’s standard features include City Safety, which can automatically apply the brakes at low speeds to help prevent a collision, dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-speaker stereo, satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, a USB/iPod port and Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system, which includes a 7-inch color display. Available features include a sunroof, navigation, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, pedestrian and cyclist detection, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and a road sign-reading system that can alert you when you’re exceeding the speed limit.

Some test drivers think the 2014 S80 has clear gauges and intuitive controls. Others say the S80’s button-heavy center stack looks outdated and takes some getting used to. Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system earns praise from some reviewers, who say it’s easier to use than the infotainment systems in cars built by Audi and BMW. However, others note that Sensus has a smaller display and less-impressive graphics than those rival systems.

  • "Gauges and buttons are easily read, logically placed and simple to use, especially Volvo's signature climate controls. The audio system is fairly easy to use, too, though the array of small audio buttons looks somewhat dated. The navigation system display is on the small side, and its software is a few years behind rivals' systems, whether you're talking graphics or processing power." -- Edmunds
  • "Volvo's Sensus infotainment is easy to operate, if occasionally a little cumbersome thanks to its lack of a joystick-style lever or touch-sensitive screen. Still, in comparison to get-out-the-owners-manual systems seen in BMW and Audi rivals, Sensus is refreshing for its simplicity." -- Left Lane News (2013 T6 AWD)
  • "The large main gauges are clearly marked and easy to read. S80's central control panel is populated with many small buttons that take some study to master and can be difficult to quickly operate while under way." -- Consumer Guide (2013)

At 14.9 cubic feet, the Volvo S80’s trunk is on par for the class, and the S80 comes with split-folding rear seats. Critics appreciate the flexibility that the split-folding rear seats provide, yet say the cabin storage is unimpressive because of a small center console and glove compartment.

  • "The S80's trunk offers 14.9 cubic feet of cargo room. While this capacity is not huge, the fold-down rear seatbacks and trunk pass-through give it some additional flexibility when you need to carry longer items." -- Edmunds
  • "Interior storage is nothing special with a small glovebox and center console bin." -- Consumer Guide (2013)
  • "The rear seats fold down to increase cargo space, which is good as trunk space is rather tight." -- Kelley Blue Book (2013)
  • "A big trunk appears ready to swallow anything Ikea can offer." -- Left Lane News (2013)
