2014 Volvo S80 Overview

Is the 2014 Volvo S80 a Good Used Car?

The Volvo S80 is a decent option if you’re shopping for a used luxury midsize car. The S80 impresses with its soft ride quality, nicely contoured seats, and quiet cabin. It scores exceptionally well for crash safety, and all models come equipped with low-speed automatic emergency braking. That said, the S80’s interior looks outdated. Its driving dynamics err on the side of dull, and fuel economy trails class rivals. You’ll want to test drive some of its higher-rated classmates before settling on this luxe Swede.

Used 2014 Volvo S80 Performance and Interior

The Volvo S80 is available with two six-cylinder engines. The S80 3.2 models have a 240-horsepower engine with front-wheel drive, while S80 T6 models have a turbocharged engine with 300 horsepower and all-wheel drive (AWD). Both are equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. The base engine delivers pokey acceleration and feels rather unrefined. The T6 is more potent, and it offers swift pickup and confident passing power, though neither engine is very fuel efficient. The S80 3.2 gets just 20 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway; the T6 returns an even lower 18/25 mpg city/highway rating.

The S80 sedan provides a soft, comfortable ride. Its suspension smooths out bumps and dips in the road with poise, and it feels surefooted when cruising at highway speeds. On winding roads, however, the Volvo lacks this same composure due to steering that feels light and rather vague.

The Volvo S80 seats five in its quiet cabin. The front seats are very comfortable and provide excellent support, even on longer trips. The rear seats are cozy as well, though legroom isn’t as generous as it is in many class competitors, like the Lexus ES. The rear outboard seats have  two full sets of LATCH connectors for securing child car seats. The S80 has a suitable 14.9 cubic feet of trunk space, which expands by folding the car’s standard 60/40-split rear seats.

The S80’s interior sports a minimalist design and quality materials. However, its overall look and feel can’t match the more luxurious appointments in competitors like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Most of the S80’s audio and climate controls are straightforward and easy to use. The Sensus infotainment system is fairly user friendly as well, featuring a 7-inch display screen located high on the dashboard. However, there are a few drawbacks. The infotainment control knob is located in an awkward spot on the dashboard, and the navigation system is somewhat slow to respond to inputs. Also, the screen’s graphics are grainy.

Should I Consider Another Used S80?

The 2014 Volvo S80 marks the eighth model year of the vehicle’s second generation. Updates for 2014 include lightly revised exterior styling, a new digital gauge cluster, and available cyclist detection. Otherwise, the S80 saw relatively few changes between the 2012 and 2014 model years. As a result, you’ll likely find similarly equipped 2012 and 2013 models with far lower prices.

2014 Volvo S80 and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Volvo S80 or 2014 Volvo S60?

The compact Volvo S60 trails the larger S80 in two key areas: trunk size and rear-seat space. In most other ways, however, the S60 is the better Volvo. The S60 provides zippier acceleration and sharper handling. It rates slightly higher for reliability, and used models are typically less expensive. Both sedans offer the same great safety features, and they ride comfortably over rough pavement.

Which Is Better: 2014 Volvo S80 or 2014 Audi A6?

The 2014 Audi A6 outclasses the S80 in almost all areas. The Audi packs far more power with its V6 and V8 engines, and it provides sportier handling without sacrificing ride quality. The A6 also benefits from roomier seating, a slightly higher reliability rating, a simpler infotainment system, and luxe available features like massaging seats. Both sedans offer a wide range of advanced safety features.

Which Is Better: 2014 Volvo S80 or 2014 BMW 5 Series?

While the S80 is typically far less expensive than the 2014 BMW 5 Series, the BMW is the better luxury sedan. The 5 Series strikes a superior balance between ride comfort and handling. It’s available with more efficient four-cylinder and diesel engines, as well as far more powerful six- and eight-cylinder engines. Factor in its high-end interior and comparable safety features list, and the BMW is simply a better pick overall.
