2012 Volvo S80 Overview

The base 2012 Volvo S80 has a six-cylinder engine, and critics agreed that it makes sufficient power, but feels underpowered compared with most rivals. They recommended the T6 model, which has a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that they said delivers strong acceleration that makes highway passing and merging effortless. The base Volvo S80 has front-wheel drive, while the T6 has all-wheel drive. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. The base 2012 S80 gets an EPA-estimated 20/29 mpg city/highway, which is mid-pack for the class. Reviewers said the Volvo S80 has a comfortable ride but isn’t especially sporty, though they said it has composed handling. Critics mentioned that the available sport-tuned suspension sharpens the S80's handling ability.

Automotive journalists wrote that the 2012 Volvo S80’s interior isn’t as luxurious as some competitors’, but most still found it comfortable. They noted that the S80’s front seats are among the most comfortable in the class. Test drivers added that the S80's rear seats are spacious enough for two adults, though they weren't overly impressed with the available space. At 14.9 cubic feet, the Volvo S80’s trunk space is on par for the class. Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system is standard, which critics said is easy to use. Other standard features include leather seats, a USB port, Bluetooth, satellite radio and Volvo's City Safety system, which can automatically apply the brakes at low speeds to help prevent a collision. Other available features include blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, driver drowsiness detection, collision warning, pedestrian detection with automatic braking, navigation, a rearview camera, heated front and rear seats and a 12-speaker Dolby stereo system.

Other Cars to Consider

Critics wrote that the 2012 Hyundai Genesis’ base V6 engine is very powerful and helps the Genesis deliver quick acceleration. They added that the Genesis has a serene ride, balanced handling and spacious and comfortable seats.

The 2012 Audi A6 was praised by reviewers for its handsome, quality interior, and it gets excellent fuel economy for the class with its base engine. They said the available supercharged V6 helps the A6 feel quite peppy, and test drivers were pleased with its nimble handling and soft ride over rough roads.
