2009 Volvo S80 Review

The 2009 Volvo S80 shines with excellent safety scores and a stylish, comfortable interior. However, if you’re looking for sport-sedan handling, reviewers agreed that the S80 is outperformed by rival luxury cars.

Pros & Cons

  • Top safety ratings
  • Comfortable front seats
  • Long list of standard features
  • Weak base engine
  • Uninspiring handling
  • Below-average reliability for the class

2009 Volvo S80 Overview

When it was new, reviewers agreed that the 2009 Volvo S80 was a smart choice for shoppers who wanted a safe, comfortable sedan that offers a hint of luxury. While critics thought that the base front-wheel drive S80 was underpowered, they liked the additional power and standard all-wheel drive which come on the T6 trim. The S80 gets up to 16/25 mpg city/highway, which is about average for the class.

Reviewers suggested avoiding the underpowered base S80 3.2 altogether. Instead, they preferred the more powerful S80 T6, which also comes with standard all-wheel drive. A V8 model is also available, but reviewers generally agreed that the T6 trim offered the best value when the S80 was new. The S80 has an excellent safety score.

The S80’s interior is comfortable and upscale for the most part, but some reviewers took issue with the quality of materials, saying that some rival sedans offer better build quality and tech features that are easier to use. Test drivers also approved of the S80’s comfortable front seats, though a few critics wished for more back-seat legroom. With just 14.9 cubic feet of cargo space, the S80’s trunk is also a bit smaller than some rivals.

Standard features on the 2009 Volvo S80 include a sunroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, wood trim, leather upholstery, power front seats, Bluetooth and dual-zone climate control. Ventilated front seats, an upgraded stereo, heated front and rear seats, navigation and a blind-spot monitoring system were available in packages or as options when the S80 was new.

Other Cars to Consider

With outstanding safety scores, the 2009 Acura RL outshines a number of other cars in the segment. Like the S80, the RL isn’t the most performance-oriented car, but its standard all-wheel drive and well-equipped interior should keep a number of buyers happy.

If you’re seeking a sportier alternative, you should check out the 2009 Infiniti M. Reviewers loved the M’s athletic handling and available engines when it was new, saying that it was one of the most fun-to-drive cars in the segment. However, the M can’t match the S80’s safety score. However, if you can sacrifice some of the S80’s practicality for the M’s performance, you’ll also get an attractive interior and a comparable list of standard features.
