2020 Volvo S60 Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.2

The 2020 Volvo S60 has a sleek and minimalistic interior design, highlighted by a tablet-style touch-screen infotainment system. However, the interface isn’t user-friendly. The car offers admirable passenger room and comfort throughout the cabin, but trunk space is unimpressive.

  • "On the whole, the S60 is legitimate competition for the German luxury mainstays. The Swedish approach may not feel as luxurious, but build quality looks to be as good as the best of them. Volvo offers plenty of high-end materials and puts them all together with care." -- Edmunds
  • "Volvo has long aligned itself with Swedish minimalism, but the S60 (and its fellow new-generation Volvos) take this to a new level. … This makes the S60’s cabin a wonderfully uncluttered place, and Volvo has taken good advantage by fitting the S60 with top-notch materials and switchgear. Aside from some detail differences, particularly on the passenger’s side of the dash, the S60’s fascia is identical to other Volvos, and that’s fine with us -- Volvo’s cabin design is totally unique, and we love it." -- Automobile Magazine (2019)
  • "Inside, the look is Scandinavian simple, with a handsomely uncluttered design." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)

Seating

The S60 seats five people on standard synthetic leather upholstery. It comes with 10-way power-adjustable front seats. Options include Nappa leather upholstery, heated front seats, ventilated and massaging front seats, front sport seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a crystal shift knob.

For securing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors on the S60’s rear outboard seats, as well as an upper tether on the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the system the second-highest rating of Acceptable for ease of use.

The S60’s front seats are extremely comfortable and offer plenty of support. Headroom is good all around, and the second row affords ample legroom as well.

  • "The high comfort point for the S60 are its seats with their excellent balance of support and compliance." -- Edmunds
  • "It’s solid, quiet and roomy, with plenty of headroom inside in spite of the huge panoramic sunroof. Back-seat room is good, too, with a 6-foot-tall passenger being able to sit behind a driver of the same height." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "It’s possible for this writer to comfortably slide his 6-foot, 2-inch frame into the rear seat without stealing precious driver-seat legroom. As you’d expect of a Volvo, all seats are comfortable, the power front buckets well-bolstered seats with good support, power lumbar adjustment, and no hot spots." -- New York Daily News (2019)

Interior Features

Standard features in the 2020 S60 include remote start, a moonroof, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 9-inch touch-screen infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, satellite radio, and two USB ports. Optional amenities include navigation, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system, and a Bowers & Wilkins premium stereo.

Standard safety features include road departure mitigation, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, oncoming collision mitigation, traffic sign recognition, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, forward automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera.

Available safety features include front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, reverse automatic emergency braking, adaptive headlights and fog lights, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, a surround-view parking camera, and Pilot Assist.

The Sensus infotainment system can be overly complicated, requiring several steps of commands to perform simple tasks. The interface looks good and operates quickly though.

  • "We appreciate the appeal of Volvo's clean and simple interior design, but it comes at the expense of convenience and usability. Many functions are touchscreen-controlled, which detracts from the quick access and convenience provided by hard buttons. Almost everything takes two button presses when one would normally do, and that becomes a hassle when on the move." -- Edmunds
  • "Familiarity with the Sensus system (something we are quickly gaining with our Four Seasons Volvo V90) can easily breed contempt. It’s easy to swipe around and find most of the functions, or to switch between a full-screen map and what’s playing on the stereo, but some bits of the interface need work -- for example, you have to fill in a lot of information to perform a simple search for particular stores or other points-of-interest." -- Automobile Magazine (2019)
  • "While Sensus is a great way to de-clutter dash (and the interface gets better with familiarity), it still causes the driver to look away from the road far too often. On a positive note, the Sensus chipset has been upgraded for 2019, which makes for faster boot times, quicker access to the back-up camera, and improved navigation recalculations." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)

Cargo

The S60 has 11.6 cubic feet of trunk space, which is a little below average for the luxury small car class. However, the trunk’s shape allows for easy loading. A hands-free power trunk lid is optional.

  • "The S60's trunk is nice and wide but a little short. Either the load floor is high or the deck height is low, but overall volume is a couple of cubic feet smaller than in competitor luxury compacts. The hinges, however, are enclosed so there's no chance of crushing cargo in the back." -- Edmunds
  • "The S60's trunk is perfectly adequate for swallowing a week's worth of luggage, and the back seats fold for even more storage. But if frequent Ikea runs are your thing (see what I did there?), you'll obviously be better off with a V60 wagon or XC60 SUV." -- CNET (2019)
  • "Standard fold-down rear seats provide convenient pass-through to the trunk, greatly increasing the usability of the somewhat smallish 11.6 cu.-ft. luggage compartment. A 12-volt power outlet in the trunk is another thoughtful touch." -- New York Daily News (2019)
