2019 Volvo S60 Performance Review

Scorecard

Performance: 8.0

Volvo offers three powertrains in the 2019 S60, ranging from a turbocharged four-cylinder to a supercharged and turbocharged plug-in hybrid. This sedan is poised and refined on the road, offering a comfortable ride. This isn’t a sports sedan, but it’s not trying to be. Those looking for comfort over agility will likely be satisfied with the Volvo S60.

  • "What’s really solid about the S60 is the clever strategy behind it. While it doesn’t have as many trims as most of its competitors do, when you compare model to model at each level of pricing the V60 (sic) is more powerful than most of them. Volvo’s four-cylinders punch way above their class in terms of power." -- Jalopnik
  • "Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters are a nice touch, but do little to really enhance the drive. That's fine, because the T6 goes about its business with refined confidence. Not too hot, not too cold -- the S60 drives with a demeanor that feels incredibly well-rounded for this sedan's intended purpose. … [G]enerally speaking, the S60 is perfectly pleasant in all situations. It's easily as enjoyable as an Audi A4 or Mercedes C300." -- CNET
  • The four-cylinder engine never feels as though it is being overtasked, and it emits a respectably inspiring exhaust note. We are also pleasantly surprised by how well the S60 takes to the curves. Steering effort is on the light side and, as is the case with almost all new cars, feedback is lacking. But the steering wheel itself is smaller than average, which contributes to a sportier impression, and the car responds precisely to your inputs. The S60 is also stable around turns, and the traction from the all-wheel-drive system further instills confidence. It's fun to drive, and not just for a Volvo." -- Edmunds

Acceleration and Power

This sedan has three strong engine options. The T5 comes with a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine that puts out 250 horsepower. T6 models supercharge this already turbocharged engine to produce 316 horsepower. T8 models go even further by adding electric motors for a grand total of 400 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Each powertrain delivers swift acceleration, and the added supercharger of the T6 produces ample power for climbing uphill or passing on the highway. The S60 gets up to 24 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, which are excellent estimates for the class. The plug-in hybrid is expected to have roughly 21 miles of all-electric range before switching back to hybrid power.

  • "Acceleration is quick and effortless." -- Edmunds
  • "The T6 has good power for merging and passing. The supercharger delivers ample low-end response and combined with the quick-spooling turbocharger whatever small amount of lag that might have been there on initial throttle tip-in is taken care of. It will sprint to 60 mph from rest in just over 5 seconds." -- New York Daily News
  • "The T6-prepped S60 is not exactly a slouch either, with an acceptable 5.3-second 0-60 time. If you can’t swing the extra coin for the hybrid T8 twin-engine S60, you won’t have any problems getting around traffic in that one." -- AutoWeek

Handling and Braking

This Volvo S60 sedan is comfortable and composed on the road. It’s not the sportiest car in the luxury small car class, but it rides smoothly over most surfaces and remains poised around twists and turns. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is available.

  • "Not too hot, not too cold -- the S60 drives with a demeanor that feels incredibly well-rounded for this sedan's intended purpose. It's wonderfully compliant and comfortable on long stretches of the 101 Freeway, but offers taut reflexes when pushed around bends. I'd like a bit more weight to the steering effort in the car's standard mode (switching into Dynamic fixes that), but generally speaking, the S60 is perfectly pleasant in all situations. It's easily as enjoyable as an Audi A4 or Mercedes C300." -- CNET
  • "No matter which S60 you choose, it’s going to be comfortable. The ride is smooth, and even on the sportiest models, the suspension still soaks a lot of the aggressive bumps in the road up with no issue." -- Jalopnik
  • "Moreover, the electric-assist power steering has a natural feel, and the ride quality of the S60 is outstanding -- supple but possessing well controlled body motions that make this midsize Volvo sedan feel totally composed on twisty pavement." -- Kelley Blue Book
