2018 Volvo S60 Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2018 Volvo S60 was new.

Interior: 7.6

The 2018 Volvo S60 offers inviting front seats and high-grade materials. The interior has a few shortcomings, including limited rear-seat legroom in the base model and a complicated infotainment system. For a roomier back seat, seek out long-wheelbase Inscription models.

  • "The S60's interior materials and sturdy build quality are typical for entry-level luxury sedans. It easily meets and sometimes exceeds expectations. Knobs and buttons have a heft that's appropriate for this class." -- Edmunds
  • "The S60 has a typical Volvo interior -- well appointed, with lots of soft-touch materials and tasteful metallic accents, plus comfortable, supportive front bucket seats." -- Autotrader (2017)
  • "Pulling the door handle, flicking the turn signal, and rotating the volume knob impart a sense of quality and substance, as does the leather upholstery and well-finished plastic surfaces of varying textures." -- Forbes (2015)

The S60 has room for five people and comes standard with leather upholstery and an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat (complete with lumbar support and memory settings). Upgraded amenities include higher-quality leather seats, heated front and rear seats, sport seats, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, a heated steering wheel, and power sunshades for the rear windows.

The front seats are exceptionally comfortable, adding to the car's quiet, relaxing ride. The rear seat varies by trim. The S60 Dynamic (base trim) has a cramped back seat, while the Inscription trims are roomier, offering back-seat travelers an extra 3.4 inches of legroom owing to a longer wheelbase. Still, the seat cushions in the rear are not as satisfying for adults as those in the front.

For child safety seats, there are two sets of lower anchors (which are mounted deep in the outboard seat cushions) and three tether anchors (which are easier to find). Beyond locating the lower anchors, all LATCH hardware takes very little effort to use.

  • "The S60 gets high marks for front-seat comfort over long distances, but the rear seats aren't as comfortable, particularly for adult-size passengers. The ride quality is on the stiff side without being harsh, and the cabin is relatively quiet. Overall, it's slightly better than average." -- Edmunds
  • "Bigger is definitely better when it comes to the latest Volvo S60 Inscription sedan and its expanded rear seat. With nearly three inches of additional legroom, the S60 goes from cramped to comfy for rear-seaters, allowing them to appreciate the rest of the finely crafted interior. The driver's seats are exceptionally comfortable and supportive." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "Where the S60 falls off somewhat in this review's (sic) eyes are in rear-seat legroom and trunk utilization. You won't get two six-footers to sit one in front of the other, and even shorter folks will have just passable room—and this car is technically a midsize, don't forget." -- Consumer Guide (2017)

Interior Features

Standard S60 interior features include a 7-inch infotainment display, the Sensus infotainment interface, an eight-speaker sound system, Bluetooth, a USB port, HD Radio, satellite radio, dual-zone automatic climate control, a moonroof, and Volvo’s City Safety system, which includes automatic braking at low speeds and pedestrian detection.

Available features include navigation, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, a proximity key, and push-button start. Volvo also offers many advanced safety features, including a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, automatic parallel park assist, and lane keep assist.

The Sensus infotainment interface is not user-friendly. The complex menu layout, multifunction knob, and excess amount of buttons take time to learn and require too much of the driver's attention. On the plus side, the display screen features sharp graphics.

  • "The primary controls are well-placed, but the driver information display is not intuitive. The infotainment screen is crisp, but the dial controller mounted on the button-heavy center stack is not ideal and some menus are complicated." -- Edmunds
  • "The audio/phone/navigation/climate controls were mostly made up of a slew of traditional buttons and knobs – we counted 32, including 10 physical station pre-select buttons (!?!), and a few took a bit of study – with some odd but easily figured out physical climate controls." -- Consumer Guide (2017)
  • "The instrumentation is easy to see and mostly logical to operate, although the single-knob controller for the infotainment system isn't very intuitive." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)

All S60 trims have a 12-cubic-foot trunk, which is typical for this class. A low liftover height, a pass-through for long items, and hooks for grocery bags make the space easier to use. Just watch out for the low-dipping trunk hinges when filling up the trunk.

  • "The 12-cubic-foot cargo capacity is small for the class, but the flat floor and low liftover height make up for that. The flip-up panel with a strap and hooks to secure shopping bags and the remote seatback releases are thoughtful touches." -- Edmunds
  • "Trunk space isn't the best – or the most versatile. The trunk's sickle-shaped hinges dip into the cargo area, eating some space, but they're covered to protect against damage to luggage. There's no official underfloor storage (just a bit of 'unofficial' space around the spare tire), and when the rear seat backs are folded, there's about a 5-inch rise from the trunk floor that's bridged by a steep ramp that may be too steep to allow easily sliding larger items all the way forward. There's also a ski pass-through, but the release for the door is inconveniently located on the back of the door, which means you have to fold down one of the seat backs to access it." -- Consumer Guide (2017)
