2015 Volvo S60 Overview

Is the 2015 Volvo S60 a Good Used Car?

The Volvo S60 is a fine option if you’re shopping for a used upscale small car with an emphasis on safety and fuel efficiency. The S60’s new Drive-E engines provide excellent fuel economy without sacrificing performance. Further, every S60 is equipped with a low-speed automatic emergency braking system as standard. A wide variety of active safety features are also available. Factor in the S60’s quality interior, smooth ride, and lower-than-average used-car prices, and it’s a smart buy in this very competitive class.

Used 2015 Volvo S60 Performance and Interior

This Volvo comes with four turbocharged engine options. The S60 T5 and T6 Drive-E models have four-cylinder engines (240 and 302 horsepower, respectively), eight-speed automatic transmissions, and front-wheel drive. The S60 T5 and T6 AWD models have five- and six-cylinder engines (250 and 325 horsepower, respectively), six-speed automatics, and all-wheel drive.

Regardless of the powertrain, all S60 sedans provide brisk acceleration and ample passing power. Both transmissions feel refined as well, and each delivers prompt shifts. The S60 T5 Drive-E earns some of the best fuel economy in its class: 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. That said, the T6 AWD model earns a far lower 19 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway.

The S60 pleases with its smooth, well-composed ride. Bumps and dips in the road are nicely softened, and the car feels stable at highway speeds. It doesn’t offer the sporty driving experience of rivals like the BMW 3 Series, but even so, the S60’s precise steering ensures it’s still a fun car to drive.

The Volvo S60 seats five and impresses with its elegant interior. The front seats are very comfortable and offer great support on long drives. The rear seats are similarly plush, though limited headroom makes them much less inviting for adults. Fabric upholstery is standard; leather and heated seats are available. There are two full sets of LATCH connectors for securing child car seats. The S60 has a rather small 12 cubic feet of trunk space, but its rear seats can fold to accommodate larger items. If you like the S60 but want the extra practicality of a hatchback, give the mechanically similar 2015 Volvo V60 a look.

Volvo equips all S60 sedans with the Sensus infotainment system. It comes with a 7-inch display, a Wi-Fi hot spot, voice recognition, text message assists, a USB input, Bluetooth, and satellite radio. Available features include navigation and rear-seat DVD screens. The S60’s audio and climate controls are laid out in a straightforward fashion, making them easy to use. The main control knob that manages the infotainment system isn’t very user-friendly, though. It’s located awkwardly on the center stack and can often complicate simple tasks.

Should I Consider Another Used S60?

The 2015 Volvo S60 marks the fifth model year of the sedan’s second generation. Major updates for 2015 include the addition of two new Drive-E engines. These changes give the 2015 S60 far better fuel economy than the 2014 model. That said, you’re likely to find used 2014 models for less money.

Which Used Volvo S60 Is Right for Me?

Deciphering Volvo’s trim levels can be tricky. There are four powertrain options: two four-cylinder Drive-E engines, the five-cylinder T5 AWD, and the six-cylinder T6 AWD R-Design. These models are split further into three trim levels: base, Premier, and Platinum.

The base S60 has a 7-inch infotainment screen, Bluetooth, satellite radio, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, and low-speed automatic emergency braking. The S60 Premier trim (standard in T6 models) adds navigation, a moonroof, and leather upholstery. The S60 Platinum trim adds a rearview camera and a large suite of active safety features. Notably, Volvo offered a limited-edition 345-horsepower S60 Polestar model with an upgraded suspension and larger brakes, but only 100 units were sold in the U.S.

You may want to shop for a certified pre-owned S60. Volvo provides all CPO vehicles with a comprehensive warranty good for seven years or 100,000 miles from the new car purchase date. Each CPO Volvo must pass a 130-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Volvo warranty page carefully.

2015 Volvo S60 and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2015 Volvo S60 or 2015 Audi A4?

The 2015 Audi A4 is one of the best sedans in the upscale small car class. The A4 mixes sporty handling with a refined ride, and it tops the S60 with a more luxurious interior, roomier seating space, and higher predicted reliability. That said, the Volvo offers more advanced safety features, better fuel economy, and typically lower used car prices. Both are fine options in this class.

Which Is Better: 2015 Volvo S60 or 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?

We named the Mercedes C-Class our 2015 Best Upscale Small Car for Families. Like the S60, the C-Class offers a slew of advanced driver assistance features, excellent fuel economy, and balanced handling. It tops the Volvo with a higher-quality interior and a better predicted reliability rating. The catch is that used C-Class models are often far more expensive than comparable S60s.
