2015 Volvo S60 Overview

Is the 2015 Volvo S60 a Good Used Car?

The Volvo S60 is an OK luxury small car. It boasts perfect safety scores, a lineup of powerful engines, and an elegant cabin. Further boosting this Volvo's appeal are its ownership costs, which are the lowest in the class. However, the S60's trunk is small, and rear-seat legroom is lacking. Its infotainment controller can also be hard to use.

How Much Does the 2015 Volvo S60 Cost to Own?

Fuel, insurance, maintenance, and repair expenses for the 2015 S60 are estimated to be around $28,600 over five years, or $5,720 per year. That’s slightly below average for the class. By comparison, those same costs for the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class are estimated to be around $2,900 more than the S60’s over five years.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New Volvo S60?

Volvo redesigned the S60 for the 2019 model year. The new S60 has more standard features, such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as revamped exterior styling, a revised infotainment console, and a semi-autonomous self-driving system. A plug-in-hybrid powertrain is available as well. While there are some big updates, the new S60 has a starting MSRP of $35,800. That’s about $15,700 more expensive than the average 2015 S60. If those updates aren’t important to you, consider saving money with a used model.

Which Model Year of the Volvo S60 Is Best?

The 2015 S60 belongs to a generation that launched for the 2011 model year. Volvo introduced a few big updates to the S60 for 2015, including more efficient Drive-E engines, a new eight-speed automatic transmission, and available features such as parallel park assist. Partway into the year, Volvo also upgraded the Sensus infotainment system to include connectivity apps such as Pandora and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

For most shoppers, the 2016 model is the best in the lineup, as it’s guaranteed to have the mid-year updates. A long-wheelbase Inscription model joined the lineup for 2016, and rear-seat passengers will appreciate the extra legroom in these models. There were no major changes to the S60 for 2017 or 2018, so there's little reason to spend the extra money for essentially the same vehicle.

Which Used Volvo S60 Model Is Right for Me?

The 2015 S60 comes in three styles: T5 Drive-E, T6 Drive-E, and T6 R-Design. The major difference between them relates to the powertrain. Every engine in the lineup is capable, and with so many features available across trims, choosing the right model is a matter of preference.

The T5 has a 240-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Opting for all-wheel drive with the T5 gets you a 250-horsepower 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic. Volvo S60 T6 models have a turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine rated at 302 horsepower. They revert to the eight-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. The S60 T6 AWD R-Design comes equipped with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that puts out 325 horsepower, paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. Finally, the S60 Polestar T6 AWD has the same engine as the R-Design, but it squeezes out 345 horsepower.

All S60 models feature the Volvo Sensus Connect infotainment system, a 7-inch screen, Bluetooth, a USB port, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Notably, the upgraded Sensus Connect infotainment system with a Wi-Fi hot spot and smartphone apps (like Pandora and Aha) came out partway into the model year, so some 2015 models don't have these features. The base trim also comes with eight-way power-adjustable front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and dual-zone automatic climate control. When it was new, the S60 T5 was available with a Premier package, which includes navigation, leather upholstery, and a moonroof.

The T6 features a sport-tuned suspension and the contents of the Premier package, including push-button start and proximity keyless entry. Several other packages were available when the S60 was new, so you might find a model with heated front and rear seats, a cabin air purification system, a heated steering wheel, and a Harman Kardon premium stereo.

Several safety features were also available, including a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, lane change assist, lane departure warning, forward collision warning with automatic braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic high beams, traffic sign recognition, adaptive headlights, a driver condition monitor, parallel park assist, and adaptive cruise control.

The S60 Polestar T6 AWD comes with almost everything you can get in this Volvo, including most of the available safety features listed above.

Certified Pre-Owned Volvo S60 Warranty

Volvo offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles five years old or less and with fewer than 80,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale’s date. Volvo provides all certified pre-owned vehicles with a comprehensive warranty good for a five-year/unlimited-mile exclusionary coverage from the new-car purchase date. Each CPO Volvo must pass a 170-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Volvo warranty page carefully.

According to our analysis, Volvo offers one of the most comprehensive CPO programs, besting the programs of rival automakers like Audi, BMW, and Lincoln.

Tons are available though, including blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, a rearview camera, automatic high beams, adaptive headlights, rear and front parking sensors, forward collision warning with brake assist, traffic sign recognition, pedestrian and cyclist detection, a following distance indicator, a driver condition monitor, adaptive cruise control, and parallel park assist.

2015 Volvo S60 Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2015 Volvo S60 or 2015 Audi A4?

The 2015 Audi A4 is one of the best luxury small cars you can buy. It has a great reliability rating, an upscale cabin, a comfortable ride, and sporty handling. Like the Volvo, the Audi has multiple engine choices, all of which are more than capable in most driving situations. Add to that the Audi’s larger trunk and roomier rear seats, and it’s not hard to see why it’s the better sedan. The Volvo is more fuel-efficient and costs less by around $2,000 on average, but we recommend picking the A4 if your budget has that kind of wiggle room.

Which Is Better: 2015 Volvo S60 or 2015 Volvo V60?

The 2015 Volvo V60 launched as an all-new model for 2015. It’s essentially the wagon variant of the S60 sedan with the same powertrain choices. Both Volvos also have similar features lists, top-notch safety scores, and limited legroom in the rear. The V60 has a lot more cargo room, but the S60 has a higher reliability rating. Unless you need the extra space, the S60 is the better choice.

2015 S60 Performance

How Does the 2015 Volvo S60 Drive?

The base S60 T5 has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 240 horsepower. All-wheel-drive T5 models have a 250-horsepower 2.5-liter five-cylinder. The S60 T6 uses the T5’s turbo-four engine but supercharges it to produce 302 horsepower, and the T6 R-Design AWD features a 325-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder engine. The Polestar model takes this engine and raises its output to 345 horsepower.

All S60 sedans provide brisk acceleration and plenty of passing power, regardless of the powertrain, though T6 models feel more energetic. The ride isn’t sporty, but this vehicle remains composed around turns. The S60’s suspension soaks up road bumps and provides a gentle ride. Front-wheel drive is standard while all-wheel drive is available. Models with FWD have an eight-speed automatic transmission, while AWD models use a six-speed automatic.

Does the 2015 Volvo S60 Get Good Gas Mileage?

Fuel economy estimates range from 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway for the base T5 Drive-E model to 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway for the Polestar and its six-cylinder engine. The base Drive-E has some of the best fuel economy estimates among luxury small cars, though the Polestar’s estimates are typical for the class.

The S60 has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for securing child car seats, as well as a third tether anchor for the rear middle seat.
