2014 Volvo S60 Overview

Is the 2014 Volvo S60 a Good Used Car?

Above-average reliability and top-flight safety scores make the 2014 Volvo S60 a good used car. Its base engine has good power, but the S60’s suspension focuses more on a soft ride than sporty handling. That’s great for straight-line cruising but not for driving on twisty roads. Interior space is an issue, with rivals like the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series delivering more room. Those competitors also have a more athletic driving experience without compromising on comfort.

Used 2014 Volvo S60 Performance and Interior

The Volvo S60 has three available engines. The base T5 has a turbocharged five-cylinder engine that makes 250 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available. The available T6 and T6 R-Design offer turbocharged six-cylinder engines that produce 300 and 325 horsepower, respectively. Both come standard with all-wheel drive. All engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

An adaptive suspension allows drivers to choose between several ride modes, ranging from comfortable to stiff. Handling is good but not athletic. The EPA fuel economy rating ranges from 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway with the T5 model to 18/25 mpg city/highway for the S60 T6.

The 2014 Volvo S60 seats five. Cloth seats and a power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory settings come standard. Leather seats, heated front and rear seats, a power-adjustable passenger’s seat, and sport seats are available. The rear seats are cramped, making them unusable for taller passengers. There are two full sets of LATCH connectors for securing child car seats in the rear outboard seats. The middle seat has a tether anchor.

The 2014 Volvo S60 has 12 cubic feet of trunk space, which is on the small size for a luxury small car. However, the rear seats fold to give you more room, and the front passenger seat in some models folds flat to carry longer items.

Standard features in the S60 include dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, satellite radio, a USB port, HD Radio, and Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system with a 7-inch screen. Voice controlled navigation and a rear-seat entertainment system are among the available features. The standard infotainment system is not intuitive, and it might be too slow for some.

How Reliable Is the 2014 Volvo S60?

How Safe Is the S60?

The 2014 Volvo S60 scores a perfect 10 for safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2014 S60 five out of five stars overall and in all conducted crash tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the S60 a Top Safety Pick+, earning the highest score of Good in all crash tests.

All S60 models feature low-speed collision avoidance. Available active safety equipment is extensive and includes blind spot monitoring, cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with full automatic braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane departure warning, road sign information, and active high beams.

Should I Consider Another Used S60?

The 2014 Volvo S60 is the fourth year of the luxury small car’s second generation, which includes the 2018 model year. Volvo made significant exterior and interior design changes to the S60 for the 2014 model year. Buying an earlier model could save you money, but it would have a more dated appearance and lack available active safety equipment, such as blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, pedestrian and cyclist alert, and lane departure warning.

Which Used 2014 Volvo S60 Is Right for Me?

Unlike most manufacturers, Volvo names its vehicles by powertrain – T5, T5 AWD, T6 AWD, and T6 R-Design AWD. There are also four trim levels: base, Premier, Premier Plus, and Platinum. The base S60 model comes with dual-zone automatic climate control, an infotainment system with a 7-inch screen, a CD player, HD Radio, USB inputs, eight speakers, Bluetooth, and satellite radio. The Premier trim (T5 and T6 AWD) adds leather seats, a power-adjustable passenger seat, a moonroof, and keyless start. Premier Plus (T5 and T6 AWD) add a rearview camera and digital compass. Finally, the Platinum trim (available with all powertrains) adds accent lighting, a premium sound system, and a navigation system with voice control.

Your best bet is to save your money and go with the T5 in the base trim. Power is good from the T5’s five-cylinder engine, and the base trim is so well equipped. It makes little sense to opt for the six-cylinder variants, unless you desire faster acceleration.

Even with its above-average reliability, you might want to consider a certified pre-owned Volvo S60. Volvo provides all certified pre-owned vehicles with a comprehensive warranty good for seven years or 100,000 miles from the new-car purchase date. Each CPO Volvo must pass a 130-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Volvo warranty page carefully.

2014 Volvo S60 and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Volvo S60 or 2014 Audi A4?

The 2014 Audi A4 has a four-cylinder base engine that doesn’t match the output of the S60’s base engine. Still, the Audi bests the Volvo when it comes to ride comfort and handling. The A4’s interior has excellent build quality, user-friendly technology, and more rear legroom. Although the S60 has lower ownership costs, the Audi’s performance and interior make it the better choice.

Which Is Better: 2014 Volvo S60 or 2014 BMW 3 Series?

The base 2014 BMW 3 Series can’t match base S60’s horsepower. However, the upper trims of the 3 Series outperform the S60, thanks to athletic handling, stronger available engines, and a smooth ride. It has a better interior, with a user-friendly infotainment system and more rear legroom. Though the 3 Series has slightly higher ownership cost, all the other factors make the BMW the better choice.
