2011 Volvo S60 Overview

When it was new, critics praised the redesigned 2011 Volvo S60 for its contemporary styling, upscale interior and newfound attempt at athleticism. While it doesn’t handle like the true sport sedans of the class, most said the new model was a huge improvement over the 2009 S60. Additionally, the 2011 S60 still retains Volvo’s reputation for safety, as demonstrated by its excellent safety score.

The S60 is powered by a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower. Critics said this engine moves the car briskly, and pairs well with the S60’s standard all-wheel drive. While it probably won’t inspire driving enthusiasts, most critics said the S60 should be agile and powerful enough for most people. Fuel economy is rated at 18/26 mpg city/highway, which is a competitive rating for an all-wheel drive car in this class. The trunk can hold up to 12 cubic feet of cargo, which trails many of the class leaders.

Reviewers liked the S60’s modern, upscale interior and praised its standard leather seats for being all-day comfortable. Among the S60’s many standard features are an eight-speaker stereo with satellite radio, Bluetooth, a power driver seat and dual-zone climate control. Available features include navigation, heated seats, a power sunroof and an upgraded stereo. In typical Volvo fashion, the S60 has a range of safety features that include the automaker’s City Safety system, which works to reduce low-speed collisions. Optional safety features when it was new include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, pedestrian detection and distance alert, which notifies the driver when the car thinks it is following another car too closely.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re looking for a sporty 2011 midsize car, you may like the 2011 Acura TL. Reviewers said that the TL has the ability to run with its most athletic rivals when equipped with all-wheel drive. The TL matches the S60’s great safety score. Critics also liked the TL’s modern interior and comfortable seats, though some complained that its button-laden center stack can be confusing.

Another alternative to consider is the 2011 Lexus ES 350, which was acclaimed as one of the most comfortable and luxurious 2011 midsize sedans available. However, its safety scores aren’t as good as the S60’s, and it isn’t available with all-wheel drive. Keep in mind that its comfort-focused demeanor means that athletic handling is not the ES’ forte.
