2009 Volvo S60 Overview

When it was new, critics said the S60 had a smooth ride and some of the most comfortable seats in the class. However, many found that its two available five-cylinder engines lacked the gusto to move the S60 with any kind of authority, though most said there was adequate power for day-to-day driving. They also said that its soft-tuned suspension meant that the S60 could not be hustled through corners, so it isn’t a great choice if you’re looking for a sport sedan. The S60 received good safety ratings.

The S60 is available with one of two turbocharged five-cylinder engines. S60 2.5T models make 208 horsepower, while the S60 T5 makes 257 horsepower. All-wheel drive is available on 2.5T models, while front-wheel drive came standard on both trims. An automatic transmission is the only one available. Most critics were underwhelmed with either engine’s ability to move the S60, but most said that power was adequate. A front-wheel drive 2.5T model averages 19/28 mpg city/highway, which is slightly better than the class average. AWD and T5 variants have slightly lower estimates. Maximum trunk space is 13.9 cubic feet, which is a competitive amount of space within the class.

Inside, the greatest compliment critics paid the S60 were for its seats, which most found to be among the most comfortable and supportive in the class. Otherwise, the comments were less enthusiastic. Reviewers noted that the overall interior design and quality fell short not only of many rival 2009 midsize cars, but even other Volvos. Standard equipment includes leather seats, a power sunroof and dual-zone climate control. Available features include heated front seats, a 13-speaker surround-sound stereo and navigation.

Other Cars to Consider

Critics said the 2009 Audi A4 has nimble, sporty handling and a refined, high-quality interior. Like the S60, the A4 is available with either front- or all-wheel drive, which makes it a good choice for those living in wintry climates. The A4 held up better in crash tests.

Reviewers praised the 2009 Lexus ES 350 for its soft suspension, which makes it one of the most comfortable cruisers available. The ES can’t match the S60’s safety score, however. Those looking for a sport sedan have better options, but critics said that those simply looking to be coddled in first-rate luxury can’t go wrong with the ES.
