2009 Volvo C70 Review

The 2009 Volvo C70 is a great hardtop convertible. However, several of the C70’s open-air competitors are much more engaging to drive.

Pros & Cons

  • Open, upscale cabin
  • Comfortable front seats
  • IIHS Top Safety Pick
  • Retracted top limits trunk space
  • Mediocre performance

2009 Volvo C70 Overview

When it was new, critics said the 2009 C70 offered year-long usability, thanks to its retractable hardtop. They also said it has a stylish, airy interior with comfortable front seats. The C70 has outstanding safety ratings. Some also remarked that for a car that is supposed to be fun, the C70’s suspension is too soft to hustle the car through corners, and its engine is little more than adequate for daily driving.

The C70 is powered by a turbocharged five-cylinder engine that makes 227 horsepower. Either a manual or automatic transmission routes power to the front wheels. Most critics said the C70 felt slow, and many wished for more power. Fuel economy for those models equipped with a manual transmission is 18/27 mpg city/highway, while automatic variants achieve 18/26. With the roof up, the C70 can store up to 12.8 cubic feet of cargo in its trunk, which is about the norm for convertibles in this class. However, with the top lowered, available trunk space is cut in half.

Critics liked the C70’s interior on the whole, saying it felt welcoming and modern with its signature Volvo waterfall-style center stack. Its front seats drew nearly universal praise as well, with critics calling them all-day comfortable. The back seat didn’t draw such praise, though, as most said the seats felt cramped, but this is a common complaint among coupes and convertibles. The C70 comes standard with leatherette seats, Bluetooth and dual-zone climate control. Optional features when it was new include leather seats, a 14-speaker Dynaudio stereo, navigation and satellite radio.

Other Cars to Consider

While the C70 got dinged by reviewers for its pedestrian performance, the 2009 Infiniti G37 is one of the most engaging cars in the class. Reviewers agreed that the G37 is both agile and powerful, thanks to its sport-tuned suspension and robust V6 engine. They also liked its upscale, comfortable interior and supportive front seats. Although the G37 has a performance edge, the C70 earns a better safety score.

The 2009 Volkswagen Eos is similar to the C70 in that it too is front-wheel drive and only offers one engine. Some critics found it to be a bit more nimble through turns, but the Eos is still a better street cruiser than nimble sports car. The Eos matches the C70 with great safety scores and a high-quality interior.
