2017 Volkswagen Touareg Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.0

The 2017 Volkswagen Touareg’s interior is certainly classier than what you’ll find in the rest of the VW lineup. With woodgrain trim, metal finishes, and an array of high-grade materials, the Touareg’s interior exudes quality. Critics disagree over whether the attention to detail is similar to what you’ll find in similarly priced SUVs from automakers like BMW, Audi, or Mercedes-Benz. Some say the Touareg’s interior doesn’t quite match the level of refinement, while others say it earns its luxury designation.

Regardless, the Touareg provides comfortable and supportive seating. Sliding and reclining seatbacks add versatility and long-ride comfort. The Touareg’s already long list of standard features gets even longer for 2017. Cargo space is about average for the class, but small-item storage is impressive.

  • "The 2017 Volkswagen Touareg's interior stakes out territory between top-level ordinary and entry-level luxury. A few luxury SUVs might look fancier inside, but the Touareg has high-quality materials and excellent build quality that's bolstered by tasteful wood and chrome accents along with simple, easy-to-use interfaces." -- Edmunds
  • "The Touareg's high-quality interior belies Volkswagen's ‘people's car’ tagline with a high-quality look and feel worthy of a BMW or Mercedes-Benz." -- Left Lane News
  • "VW's new Touareg offers up a tastefully appointed interior, with a clean and restrained design that's carefully assembled with excellent materials. While it lacks the intricate details of a luxury brand like Audi or BMW, it feels far higher-end than a typical family hauler." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)

Seating

The 2017 Touareg seats five. The base model comes with leatherette upholstery, heated and eight-way power-adjustable front seats, and a heated steering wheel. Upper trims come with 14-way power-adjustable front seats, heated rear seats, and memory settings for the driver’s seat and sideview mirrors.

The front seats provide ergonomic comfort and support. In fact, according to test drivers, any seat in the Touareg would be great for a long road trip or highway commute. Rear-seat space is on par or better than many luxury midsize SUVs, and they recline and slide, allowing passengers the ability to get a little more comfortable.

  • "The Touareg is strictly a two-row, five-passenger SUV, but its rear seat is roomy, with reclining seatbacks and a useful amount of sliding seat travel. Rear-seat legroom is competitive for a midsize SUV, while the seat bottom is high enough to give rear passengers both solid thigh support and a nice view out." -- Edmunds
  • "There are supportive seats in front, and the 60/40-folding rear bench seat slides fore-aft and reclines." -- Kelley Blue Book (2016)
  • "And with the backseat's elevated bench and copious knee and headroom, the Touareg also happens to be one of the best vehicles we can think of for covering long distances with four adults." -- Autotrader (2014)

Interior Features

For the 2017 Touareg, Volkswagen added quite a few new items to the standard features list. Now, the base trim comes with dual-zone climate control, an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system, an eight-speaker audio system, satellite radio, Bluetooth, navigation, a rearview camera with rear parking sensors, heated and rain-sensing windshield wipers, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic braking, lane departure warning, and Volkswagen’s Car-Net telematics system.

Optional features include a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree parking camera, and a Dynaudio 10-speaker premium audio system.

The 8-inch touch-screen display is newly standard for 2017, and it is easy to read and use, with sharp graphics and prompt responses to user inputs. Both audio and climate controls are intuitively organized and straightforward.

  • "The Touareg has always been pretty well equipped, but this year's model goes even further as VW has added some previously optional features as standard. Every 2017 Touareg now has adaptive cruise control, a rearview camera, a trailer hitch and an 8-inch touchscreen, and that's on top of last year's already quite extensive feature roster." -- Edmunds
  • "… [The infotainment system’s] big screen, large controls, high contrast and quick operation make it simple and pleasant to use." -- Cars.com (2015)
  • "Climate controls are simple to operate and logically arranged." -- Consumer Guide (2012)

Cargo

The 2017 Touareg’s cargo capacity is about average for the class. Its 32.1-cubic-foot cargo hold expands to 64 cubic feet once you collapse the 60/40 split-folding rear seats. The rear seats don’t fold completely flat, but the Touareg’s boxlike roofline makes the available space more usable.

With the standard setup, you’ll get a remote power liftgate with a hands-free opening function. Wolfsburg models come with an electric rear-seat release in the cargo area that lets you fold down the back seats with the touch of a button. The Touareg’s glove box and large center console and door pockets help maximize small-item storage space.

  • Behind the Tiguan's rear seats, there's 32.1 cubic feet of cargo space. Fold the second row flat and you get 64 cubic feet of space. Though that's a few feet fewer than many rival crossovers, the Volkswagen's relatively boxy roof line makes the most of it." -- Edmunds
  • The Touareg can swallow quite a bit of gear, but not as much as the more recommendable Mercedes-Benz GLE or even a Jeep Grand Cherokee." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • Overall room is class-competitive, though the rear seat backs don't fold flat. The glovebox has decent capacity, but the center console and door pockets are generously sized." -- Consumer Guide (2012)
