2015 Volkswagen Touareg Review

Even though there's a lot to like about the 2015 Volkswagen Touareg, it ranks in the middle of its highly competitive class because it has a lower predicted reliability rating than rivals and can’t quite match the luxury and athleticism of some competitors.

Pros & Cons

  • Smooth ride
  • Premium interior materials
  • Below-average predicted reliability rating
  • Poor fuel economy

2015 Volkswagen Touareg Overview

Is the 2015 Volkswagen Touareg a Good Used SUV?

Yes, the 2015 VW Touareg is a good used luxury midsize SUV. It has punchy available powertrains, comfortable and confident handling, and an upmarket interior. There are also loads of features available, ample passenger space, and good safety scores. The Touareg's only negatives are its poor fuel economy and below-average reliability rating.

Used 2015 Volkswagen Touareg Performance and Interior

Though it's not especially thrilling to drive, the Touareg has solid performance for daily commuting or long-distance cruising. There are three powertrains available, a gasoline V6, a hybrid powertrain, and a turbodiesel V6 (TDI). All engines come with an automatic transmission. The base V6 is adequate for driving around town, but it's not particularly punchy at high speeds. It returns subpar gas mileage, too: just 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

The hybrid powertrain is the most powerful of the three, but unlike most hybrids, it doesn't get very good fuel economy. The turbodiesel offers the best combination of power and gas mileage, but it is included in the recall of Volkswagen's diesel engines. This means its performance may be affected. (Read more about the recall here.) The Touareg strikes a good balance between comfort and composure; however, there is some body lean when taking corners at higher speeds. All models come standard with all-wheel drive, which VW calls 4MOTION.

Open the Touareg's doors and you'll find a handsomely styled cabin fitted with appealing trim pieces, like chrome or wood veneer. The Touareg is spacious and comfortable in both rows. The front seats in all models are heated, and rear seats in Executive trim models may also be heated. There are full sets of LATCH child-seat connectors on each of the rear outboard seats along with an additional upper tether on the rear middle seat.

The Touareg's standard touch-screen infotainment system is easy to use and has quick responses to inputs. While many features are controlled using the touch screen, there are still some easy-to-reach physical controls for climate and audio settings. Other standard features include an eight-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, a six-disc CD changer, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Some models add a navigation system, a larger touch screen, or a Dynaudio premium sound system.

Should I Consider Another Used Touareg?

The 2015 Touareg is part of the generation that launched with the 2011 model and ends with the 2017 model. There are some differences between the model years. For 2015, the Touareg's styling was refreshed, and new safety features were added, like lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. A uniquely styled R-Line trim was available during the 2014 model year.

Which Used Volkswagen Touareg Is Right for Me?

While the base Sport trim is well-equipped, many buyers may find the Sport with Technology package to be a better option. It's available with the TDI diesel engine (availability may be limited), and has desirable features like navigation, a hands-free liftgate, push-button start, blind spot monitoring, a rearview camera, and a towing package. The Lux model adds wood interior trim, leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, and parking sensors, while the Executive trim has a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, a Dynaudio sound system, and a 360-degree camera system. The Hybrid has the same features as the Executive trim, along with lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control.

Volkswagen provides a two-year/24,000-mile limited warranty on all of its certified pre-owned vehicles. Each CPO Volkswagen must pass a 160-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Volkswagen warranty page carefully.

2015 Volkswagen Touareg and Other SUVs to Consider

The Touareg straddles the line between mainstream brand SUVs and luxury models, both in price as well as interior refinement. Upper trims, like the Lux and Executive models, are more comparable to high-end rivals.

Which Is Better: 2015 Volkswagen Touareg or 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Like the Touareg, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a bit more luxurious than most mainstream brands' midsize SUVs. While both models have subpar predicted reliability ratings and low fuel economy estimates, they also offer upscale cabins, numerous features, and comfortable rides. As an added bonus, the Grand Cherokee has exceptional off-road capabilities. Ultimately, the Grand Cherokee's lower price makes it a better buy.

Which Is Better: 2015 Volkswagen Touareg or 2015 Porsche Cayenne?

The Porsche Cayenne is a significantly better SUV than the Touareg, but it costs significantly more. If you can afford the Cayenne, you'll get one of the most luxurious midsize SUVs on the market, along with sporty yet comfortable handling, and an excellent predicted reliability rating.
