2015 Volkswagen Touareg Overview

Is the 2015 Volkswagen Touareg a Good Used SUV?

The 2015 Volkswagen Touareg is a decent used luxury midsize SUV. It offers a lot for families to like, including roomy seating space for five, a comfortable ride, and an upscale interior. It also offers alternative powertrains – like a diesel and a hybrid – that you can't get in every rival. However, its below-average reliability rating keeps it from ranking higher in this class.

It's worth noting that Touareg diesel models were affected by the Volkswagen emissions scandal, and EPA-mandated updates could alter performance and fuel economy.

How Much Does the 2015 Volkswagen Touareg Cost to Own?

The 2015 Touareg’s five-year costs for gas, insurance, repairs, and maintenance are projected to be about $30,600, or $6,120 per year. That’s a bit lower than average for a used luxury midsize SUV.

Is It Better to Buy a Used or New Touareg?

Volkswagen stopped selling the Touareg in the United States after the 2017 model year, so you can't buy a new one without going overseas. You can buy its replacement though, the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas, which starts at around $30,900. The Atlas is a seven-passenger SUV, and it provides significantly more cargo space than the Touareg. It also offers a user-friendly infotainment system and more standard safety features. You may spend less by purchasing a used Touareg, but for many buyers, the added refinement and space of the new Atlas is worth the extra money.

You can't buy a new luxury midsize SUV for the price of a used 2015 Touareg. New luxury midsize SUVs almost all start north of $40,000. If you drop down to the luxury compact SUV class, however, you'll find a few options that fall within the range of a used 2015 Touareg. The 2019 Buick Envision starts at around $32,000, while the 2019 Lincoln MKC starts at about $34,000. The 2019 Acura RDX starts at $37,400, which is a little less than you'll pay for a top-trim 2015 Touareg, but it may be worth the money. The RDX was both our 2019 Best Luxury Compact SUV for the Money and Best Luxury Compact SUV for Families.

Which Model Year of the Volkswagen Touareg Is Best?

The 2015 Touareg belongs to a generation that began with the 2011 model year and ended with the 2017 model. The Touareg didn't change all that much through these years. The R-Line trim debuted for the 2014 model year and was discontinued for 2015. The 2015 Touareg also saw driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning become available.

For 2016, Volkswagen discontinued the Touareg Hybrid. The 2017 model saw some previously available features added to the standard features list: navigation, a rearview camera, forward collision warning with brake assist, and blind spot monitoring.

It's up to you to determine which model year represents the best value. You can likely save thousands of dollars by purchasing an older Touareg, but you'll miss out on changes seen in newer editions.

Which Used Volkswagen Touareg Trim Is Right for Me?

The 2015 Volkswagen Touareg comes in five trim levels: Sport, Sport with Technology, Lux, Executive, and Hybrid. Trim selection comes down to a few big decisions, like which powertrain you want. If you want a hybrid, you only have one choice. If you're on the hunt for the turbodiesel engine, you'll need to stick with the Sport with Technology, Lux, or Executive trims, as they're the only three that were offered with the TDI engine when the Touareg was new.

Powertrain notwithstanding, the Sport with Technology trim makes a great choice, as it adds handy features like a navigation system and a rearview camera to the base trim's already decent features list. You may want to jump up one more level to the Lux, which comes with additional comfort features like leather upholstery.

The base Volkswagen Touareg Sport trim comes with a 280-horsepower V6 engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, an eight-speaker stereo, satellite radio, an iPod interface, and Bluetooth.

The Touareg Sport with Technology trim adds a power liftgate, blind spot monitoring, a rearview camera, an 8-inch touch screen, and navigation, while the Lux trim also comes with a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and front and rear parking sensors. The Executive trim adds heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a 10-speaker Dynaudio sound system, and a 360-degree camera.

The Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid comes with a 380-horsepower powertrain comprising a V6 engine and an electric motor. In addition to the Executive's features, the Touareg Hybrid comes with adaptive cruise control.

What Does Volkswagen’s Certified Pre-owned Warranty Cover?

Volkswagen CPO warranties vary depending on model. See your VW dealer for information. Volkswagen CPO vehicles must pass a 100-plus point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Volkswagen warranty page carefully.

According to our research, Volkswagen's CPO program isn't as robust as those from most other automakers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not put the 2015 Touareg through any crash tests.

There aren't any notable advanced safety features that come standard in the 2015 Touareg, but many are available. These include a rearview camera, a 360-degree camera system, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning with brake assist, and adaptive cruise control.

2015 Volkswagen Touareg Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2015 Volkswagen Touareg or 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Touareg both straddle the line between luxury and nonluxury SUVs. They're more upscale than most nonluxury competitors, but they don't offer the same level of refinement as SUVs from Mercedes and Audi. Both models have subpar reliability ratings and low fuel economy estimates, though they do offer upscale cabins, numerous features, and a comfortable ride. As an added bonus, the Grand Cherokee has exceptional off-road capabilities.

Which Is Better: 2015 Volkswagen Touareg or 2015 Porsche Cayenne?

The 2015 Porsche Cayenne ranks well ahead of the Touareg in this class. It's much more athletic and fun to drive, and it looks and feels more luxurious inside than its VW cousin. The Cayenne also earns a significantly higher reliability rating and offers a wider range of powerful engines to choose from. The only downside with the Porsche is that its average price is much higher than the Volkswagen's.

2015 Touareg Performance

How Does the 2015 Volkswagen Touareg Drive?

The Touareg has three engine options: a 280-horsepower V6, a 240-horsepower turbodiesel V6, and a 380-horsepower hybrid powertrain that pairs a supercharged V6 with an electric motor.

The standard gas V6 gets the job done for daily driving, whether you're driving around town or on the highway. However, the available turbodiesel and hybrid models have more punch and deliver better acceleration, while also getting better fuel economy.

Though it can't keep up with sporty classmates like the Porsche Cayenne, the Touareg handles well and has accurate steering. Additionally, it generally rides smoothly over most road surfaces. All-wheel drive is standard, which isn't the case with every competitor.

Does the 2015 Volkswagen Touareg Get Good Gas Mileage?

The Touareg’s standard V6 engine gets worse fuel economy than most rivals. It returns just 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The alternative powertrains have better gas mileage. The turbodiesel gets 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, while the hybrid gets an estimated 20/24 mpg city/highway.

2015 Volkswagen Touareg Towing Capacity

The Touareg can tow up to 7,716 pounds when properly equipped.

How Many People Does the 2015 Touareg Seat?

The 2015 Touareg is a two-row SUV with five seats. It comes standard with synthetic leather upholstery. Genuine leather, power-adjustable front seats, heated front and rear seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

This Volkswagen has a well-built cabin with a lot of soft-touch materials. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and they offer plenty of space. The reclining and sliding rear seats are similarly accommodating. The optional sunroof reduces headroom slightly.

How Many Car Seats Fit in the 2015 Volkswagen Touareg?

The 2015 Touareg has two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors. Two car seats will fit easily enough in the back seat, but the lower connectors are set deep in the seat cushion, making them tough to access.

2015 Volkswagen Touareg Features

Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-speaker stereo, satellite radio, an iPod interface, and Bluetooth. Available features include push-button start, a panoramic sunroof, and an infotainment system with satellite radio, a 10-speaker Dynaudio stereo system, and an 8-inch touch screen with navigation.

The Touareg features large controls for the climate and audio functions, which are easy to see and use. However, in trims with the optional touch screen, the navigation system absorbs some of these functions, making them less user-friendly.
