2012 Volkswagen Touareg Interior Review

Note: This interior review was created when the 2012 Volkswagen Touareg was new.

Interior: 8.0

The 2012 VW Touareg’s cabin is comfortable and spacious, with easy-to-use controls. More than one reviewer compares its interior quality with that of an Audi.

  • “All models have a very classy interior befitting their premium nature. Padded surfaces abound, and the genuine wood trim looks very nice.” -- Consumer Guide
  • "The interior is comfortable and of impeccable quality.” -- Car and Driver
  • "The cabin is quiet, and the materials work well together. One of our testers came in a buttery trim, and the other had dark finishing; both presented well.” -- AutoWeek
  • "On our topline testers, the materials quality, design and fitment neared Audi levels and the enlarged interior was certainly noticeable.” -- Motor Trend

The Volkswagen Touareg can seat up to five people, and comes standard with eight-way power-adjustable heated front seats with leatherette upholstery and a 60/40-split folding rear seat that reclines and slides a few inches forward or back. Upgrading to the Lux trim will swap those seats for 12-way adjustable front seats with lumbar support and leather upholstery. The Executive trim comes standard with heated rear seats.

Reviewers are surprised by how roomy the back seat is, and say that the front seat is very comfortable.

  • "VW wisely eschews the third-row, and there's plenty of space in the second row for an average size adult to stretch out, lots of headroom front and rear, and a comfortable driving position." -- AutoWeek
  • "While I often relate the cars I review to my status as a parent, I really can see the Touareg being the choice of parents who don't want to upgrade to a luxury nameplate just to have it brutalized by their offspring. Indeed, the imitation leather seats in the base model may be the perfect surface for messy kids.” -- Cars.com
  • “The panoramic sunroof on Lux, Executive, and Hybrid models steals some headroom, which tall occupants will find bothersome. The (front) seats are designed for long-haul comfort, rather than sporty bolstering, and they work well in this regard.” -- Consumer Guide
  • “There’s plenty of room for adults or child-safety seats in the second row.” -- Mother Proof

Interior Features

The Volkswagen Touareg comes equipped at a level that’s consistent with its class. The base Touareg Sport comes standard with features like dual-zone automatic climate control, a self-dimming rearview mirror, an eight-speaker sound system and iPod integration. Options include electric seat release buttons for the back seat, push-button start, leather seats and an upgraded stereo system.

Reviewers appreciate the clever, high-tech touches found throughout the Volkswagen Touareg’s cabin. Most say that the navigation, which is standard on all but the base model, is intuitive, but one says the touch screen complicates the audio system.

  • "Climate controls are simple to operate and logically arranged. All models except the base Sport have a standard navigation system, which absorbs, and complicates, some audio functions.” -- Consumer Guide
  • "The onboard systems and satellite navigation are intuitive to use through the VW's touchscreen interface.” -- Edmunds
  • "The user interface is simple and straightforward and the navigation system offers 3D views of the terrain as well as the outlines of buildings.” -- Motor Trend
  • "The Touareg has a new key fob. Gone is the flip-out key. Instead, the entire fob, about half the size of a modern cell phone, is inserted into a slot on the dash-where a key would normally go. And then the entire key is twisted to start. It's an old idea, new again.” -- Road and Track

The Volkswagen Touareg can hold 32.1 cubic feet of cargo when all seats are in use, and folding down the second row results in a maximum cargo capacity of 64 cubic feet. The second row folds forward with a one-touch lever, though the load floor isn’t quite flat. Reviewers note that the Touareg’s small-items storage is above-average.

  • "I found cupholders, cubbies and bins enough to contain all of my clutter, and the cargo space is roomy enough for a serious run to Costco.” -- Mother Proof
  • "Overall room is class-competitive, though the rear seat backs don't fold flat. The glovebox has decent capacity, but the center console and door pockets are generously sized.” -- Consumer Guide
