2011 Volkswagen Tiguan Overview

When it was new, critics liked the Tiguan’s luxurious-feeling interior and comfortable seats, as well as its nimble handling. While some said its engine is loud and buzzy, most said it offered more-than-adequate power for all driving situations. The Tiguan’s safety score is near the top of the class.

The Tiguan is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 200 horsepower. Critics generally said it makes plenty of power, but some noticed hints of turbo lag. The base front-wheel drive S trim is available with either a manual or automatic transmission, while all upper trims and all-wheel drive variants only have automatic transmissions. A manual-equipped Tiguan manages 18/26 mpg city/highway, which is a bit lower than class leaders. Those with an automatic transmission or all-wheel drive average slightly less.

Reviewers gave the Tiguan’s interior a lot of praise for its use of soft-touch, high-quality materials usually only found in luxury vehicles. They said its seats provided plenty of comfort and support, as well as ample space in both the front and rear. The Tiguan can carry up to 56.1 cubic feet of cargo with its rear seats folded, which is fairly low for the class. The base S model comes with leatherette seating and a stereo with auxiliary input and satellite radio. Features on upper trims and option packages include navigation, leather seats, Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control, a power sunroof and a backup camera.

Other Cars to Consider

One alternative to consider is the 2011 Subaru Forester. The Forester isn’t as luxurious as the Tiguan, but critics said it has a spacious interior and they liked its standard all-wheel drive system. The Forester can also haul significantly more cargo than the Tiguan.

Another alternative you may like is the 2011 GMC Terrain. Critics said the Terrain has an upscale, comfortable interior, as well as refined, comfortable handling. Models with the four-cylinder engine also have fuel economy that’s among the best in the class.
