Pros & Cons

  • Very nice interior for the class
  • Agile handling
  • Comfortable seats
  • Excellent safety ratings
  • Small cargo area

2010 Volkswagen Tiguan Overview

When it was new, critics liked the Tiguan for its nimble handling and ample engine power, which they said makes it feel quite zippy for an SUV. They also enjoyed its interior, which has comfortable and spacious seats in the front and back.

Powering the Tiguan is a 200-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine that most critics said provides good power. Either front- or all-wheel drive is available with an automatic transmission. A manual transmission is only available with front-wheel drive base models. Fuel economy is not the Tiguan’s strong suit. An automatic transmission-equipped Tiguan with either drivetrain gets 18/24 mpg city/highway, which is fairly low for the class. Manual transmission-equipped models average slightly better, but these models might be somewhat difficult to come by.

Inside, the Tiguan’s cabin earned lots of praise for its comfortable, spacious seats all around, as well as its upscale, high-quality materials and good fit and finish. If you’re looking for a near luxury interior, the Tiguan is a good bet. Maximum cargo space with the rear seats folded is 56.1 cubic feet, which is fairly low for the class. The Tiguan comes standard with cloth seats and an eight-speaker stereo with an auxiliary input jack. Upper trims and option packages add features like leather seats, navigation, a 10-speaker Dynaudio stereo, Bluetooth, satellite radio, dual-zone climate control, a power sunroof and a backup camera.

Other Cars to Consider

If you’re considering the Tiguan, you may want to look into the 2010 Subaru Forester as well. It doesn’t offer the luxury or refinement of the Tiguan, but critics said its interior offers plenty of space and comfort. It also has a more expansive cargo area, which may make it a better choice for families.

Another 2010 compact SUV worth considering is the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. The Equinox has more cargo space than the Tiguan, as well as a flexible interior with back seats that slide back and forth to accommodate either taller passengers or more cargo. Keep in mind that it isn’t as luxurious as the Tiguan, but most critics said it offers plenty of comfort in all of its seats.
