2009 Volkswagen Tiguan Overview

When it was new, the Tiguan was praised for its upscale cabin and composed ride and handling. Critics agreed that it is more entertaining to drive than most of its competitors and offers greater cabin luxury. Bear in mind that it has less cargo and back-seat space than many rivals, so those shopping for a family vehicle may want to skip the Tiguan. Its crash test ratings are excellent.

The Tiguan is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower. Overall, critics said that the ample engine power was one of the best traits of the Tiguan. Front-wheel drive models are available with either an automatic or manual transmission, while those with all-wheel drive are automatic only. Those equipped with a manual transmission get 19/26 mpg city/highway, which is okay, but not outstanding, for the class. Automatic-equipped models get 18/24 mpg with either front- or all-wheel drive.

Critics generally enjoyed spending time in the Tiguan’s cabin. They said it is richly appointed for the class and the seats, especially those in the front, were deemed comfortable for the long haul. Some reviewers did gripe about a lack of legroom in the back, however. Cargo hauling is also not the Tiguan’s strongest suit. With the rear seats folded, the Tiguan can carry up to 56.1 cubic feet of cargo, which is fairly low for the class. Standard equipment includes cloth seats and an eight-speaker CD stereo with satellite radio. Upper trims add leather seats with front heating and an upgraded stereo with an auxiliary input jack. Features like navigation, a panoramic sunroof and a backup camera are available on upper trims.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2009 Subaru Forester is not as upscale as the Tiguan, but what it lacks in refinement it makes up for in practicality. Critics said it has spacious, comfortable seats in both the front and rear, and it also has a commodious cargo area. The Forester also comes standard with all-wheel drive, which is great for anyone who lives in snowy regions or simply wants the added traction of AWD.

Another 2009 compact SUV worth considering is the 2009 Honda CR-V. The CR-V is highly-ranked due to its high-quality, spacious cabin and composed driving manners. When it was new, critics said it felt underpowered, but that it was otherwise a pleasant-riding vehicle. They also liked its back seat and cargo area, which are both very spacious for the class.
