2009 Volkswagen Rabbit Review

The 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit is a hatchback that offers a great combination of practicality and spirited performance. It also has a well-made and comfortable cabin, though other 2009 small cars have better gas mileage.

Pros & Cons

  • Peppy performance
  • Surprisingly spacious second-row seats
  • Standard electronic stability control
  • Good safety scores
  • Not as fuel-efficient as top competitors

New for 2009

  • Final year in production; replaced with Volkswagen Golf
  • Standard six-speed automatic transmission

2009 Volkswagen Rabbit Overview

According to reviewers who drove it when it was new, the 2009 Volkswagen Rabbit has impressive performance and an upscale cabin. All models come with a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine, and test drivers said it provides good power. The Rabbit also has good crash test scores. One downside of the Rabbit is that it gets just 20/29 mpg city/highway with an automatic transmission, which isn’t great fuel economy for the class.

The Rabbit also has a comfortable and well-made passenger cabin. Though it’s a small hatchback, reviewers said the second-row seats are surprisingly spacious, and cargo space is good. Reviewers also appreciated that the Rabbit comes with power windows and door locks, air conditioning, cruise control and a 10-speaker stereo with an auxiliary input jack. Higher trims add features like heated front seats and a stereo with satellite radio and a CD changer. The Rabbit also comes with anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control. Many 2009 small cars don’t have these active safety features as standard equipment.

Other Cars to Consider

If you want more standard interior features and higher fuel economy, consider the 2009 Scion xD. It comes with many of the features the Rabbit does, but adds a Pioneer stereo with a standard USB port. On the downside, the xD doesn’t have standard electronic stability control, its back seat is uncomfortable and it has less cargo space than the Rabbit with the rear seats up.

The 2009 Honda Fit has even more interior space than the Rabbit. Reviewers were impressed with its comfortable, five-seat cabin, which offers versatile storage options and more cargo space than most hatchbacks. The Fit doesn’t have standard electronic stability control and its engine isn’t as powerful as the Rabbit’s, but test drivers still labeled the Fit as one of the most fun-to-drive models in the class. The Fit also gets better gas mileage.
