2020 Volkswagen Passat Interior Review

Interior: 6.8

Volkswagen refreshed the Passat’s cabin for 2020, but it still feels relatively utilitarian and out of style. The infotainment system feels outdated too. However, the seats are roomy and comfortable, and trunk space is good for the segment.

  • "Unfortunately, a slightly modernized interior and extra niceties can't hide the car's obvious age inside. The dashboard and center console, though clean and easy to use, look positively spartan when compared to others in the segment." -- Motor Trend
  • "Inside, the redesigned cabin is attractive enough; we particularly like the visual connection between the central air vents and the one near the passenger door. Everything feels of reasonable quality, especially on the upper trims, but those familiar with Volkswagen cars over the years will immediately recognize it as somewhat dated." -- Automobile Magazine
  • "The 2020 Passat’s interior is significantly more stylish than the simple, utilitarian previous model. Trim connects the air vents together to make them appear as though they stretch the full width of the dashboard. It’s also paired with more prominent contrasting trim that can be faux aluminum or faux wood depending on trim level. Although everything fits well, the materials are just middle of the road with lots of hard plastic." -- Autoblog

The Volkswagen Passat can seat up to five people. Cloth seats are standard, and synthetic leather upholstery, genuine leather upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are available.

Thanks to an abundance of head- and legroom, there is ample space for most adults in both rows. However, the center console cuts into front-passenger knee room.

For securing child safety seats, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the Passat’s rear outboard seats. The rear middle seat also has a single tether anchor. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this system the top rating of Good for ease of use.

  • "The interior got the lightest touch, and it also most shows the limitations of not investing in a redesign on VW’s new platform. It is still just as capacious, with backseat space for real adults – even three across – and the seats are comfortable and supportive." -- Cars.com
  • "Interior dimensions are unchanged, and the Passat remains one of the roomiest midsize sedans on the market." -- Edmunds
  • "The story is about the same inside the Passat, with head, shoulder and legroom within an inch either way of most of the competition. From our experience sitting in the Passat, the rear seat is cavernous, particularly its legroom, with plenty of space for a reasonably tall person such as your 5-foot 11-inch author to sit behind himself comfortably. The front seating feels a bit tight due to the center stack and console encroaching on knee room." -- Autoblog

Interior Features

This Volkswagen sedan comes with a 6.3-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Mirror Link, satellite radio, HD Radio, a USB port, and Bluetooth.

The touch screen is small, and the infotainment system feels out-of-date compared to other Volkswagen products. Some critics find it easy to use, but others say it’s distracting since you have to take your eyes off the road to use the side-mounted buttons.

Several more features are available, including navigation, a Wi-Fi hot spot, an eight-speaker premium stereo, two additional rear-seat USB ports, remote start, push-button start, proximity keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a sunroof.

Standard safety features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and a rearview camera.

Available driver aids include lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, and a parallel park assist system.

  • "… front and center in that reshaped dash is the same 6.3-inch version of the MIB II infotainment suite as before. In a world where even the compact Golf can be had with a beefy 8-inch display, the Passat's screen feels tiny. … the Passat also lacks Volkswagen's Digital Cockpit. At the very least, it does support Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink as standard features." -- CNET
  • "No matter what trim level of Passat you choose, you’ll get a 6.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It’s similar to what’s found in other Volkswagens, and it’s responsive and simple to use. It's also smaller than what you'd find in many competitors." -- Autoblog
  • "… the most critical deficit was with multimedia and display tech that lags more modern systems, including the excellent tech available on the latest generations of other Volkswagens. Almost all of it, says Volkswagen, is a function of the outdated wiring harness embedded in Passat’s older platform. That means no access to … Volkswagen’s flashy new configurable instrument cluster. Nor to the 8-inch display and slick multimedia system offered in other VWs. … And in a step backward, the former physical shortcut buttons have morphed into touch controls on either side of the touchscreen that you can’t feel and have to look down to use." -- Cars.com

The Passat’s 15.9 cubic feet of trunk space is above average for a midsize car. A hands-free trunk lid is available.

  • "The trunk is a sizable 15.9 cubic feet, which tops most of the competition including the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy and Mazda6, but it’s … smaller than the Accord’s huge 16.7 cubic foot trunk." -- Autoblog
  • "Four adults packing for a weekend road trip will find no shortage of space for their luggage. A hands-free trunk opener on SEL models further enhances usability in the event you need to access the trunk with your hands full. Simply wave your foot under the rear bumper and the lid pops up." -- Edmunds
