2009 Volkswagen Passat Wagon Overview

For 2009, the Volkswagen Passat Wagon lost its available all-wheel drive, manual transmission and six-cylinder engine that were offered on the previous year’s models. Instead, a standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine is mated with an automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. Even with the loss of the six-cylinder engine, most reviewers said the turbocharged engine provides the Passat Wagon with enough power. The Passat Wagon gets 19/28 mpg city/highway, which is typical for the class, but the VW Passat Wagon requires premium gas. Test drivers did not like the automatic because of its slow response time getting up to speed. They said the Passat Wagon handles well on the highways and has precise steering.

For 2009, the Passat Wagon is only available in one trim with not as many options as the 2008 model. Standard cloth upholstery was not able to be upgraded to the leatherette for 2009, but despite the limited options, reviewers still liked the quality of the interior. Plus, there’s 35.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, which is good for the class. Test drivers noted that the location and angle of some of the gauges are hard to read, and the driver's knee may rub against the center console.  Standard features on the Passat Wagon include a heated windshield washer nozzle, six-disc CD changer, satellite radio, 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and heated front seats. Features that were available in a technology package include a navigation system, 30 GB hard drive, SD memory card slot and a media device interface. Reviewers noticed when using the navigation system there is a slight delay in processing requests.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2009 Ford Taurus X has a third row that can seat up to seven. The Taurus X's safety scores rank at the top of its class.

The 2009 Kia Rondo is another large wagon with seating up to seven. Even with a larger passenger capacity than the Passat wagon, the Rondo has an EPA-estimated 20/27 mpg with a four-cylinder engine and automatic transmission. Unlike the Passat Wagon, the Rondo offered a choice between a four- and six-cylinder when it was new for those who want extra power.
