2020 Volkswagen Jetta Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 7.3

The 2020 Volkswagen Jetta has good build quality and some soft-touch materials. However, quite a few hard plastics are found throughout the cabin, taking away from its overall appeal. That said, the Jetta provides plenty of passenger and cargo space, and its infotainment features are user-friendly.

  • Agreeably, VW injected a bit more style into this Jetta generation. Unfortunately, though, it has more hard scratchy plastics than its VW Golf sibling, as well as competitors like the Honda Civic and Mazda3." -- Autoblog
  • "The comfy, roomy interior is a big step forward compared to the old Jetta, with more soft-touch materials around the cockpit and darn fine build quality for a sub $20,000 car." -- Autoweek (2019)
  • The Jetta's interior looks nice, and a few surfaces have soft-touch coverings, but there is a lot of hard, lightweight plastic." -- Edmunds (2019)

Seating

The Jetta seats up to five people and comes standard with cloth upholstery. The seats are supportive and comfortable, with enough space in both rows for even tall adults.

Synthetic or genuine leather upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a heated steering wheel, front sport seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats are available.

For securing child safety seats, the Jetta has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats, as well as an upper tether for the rear middle seat. The upper tethers are easy to find, but it can be difficult to maneuver around the lower anchors.

  • "Rear seat legroom is vast, and rear-facing child seats fit with ease, making the Jetta a good option for families on a tight budget." -- Autoblog
  • "In the back, the seats offer ample space and a comfortable seating position." -- Consumer Reports (2019)
  • "What we found during a brief test was that the new Jetta is, indeed, roomy inside. Typically for Volkswagen, there is a huge amount of front headroom and legroom on offer, and even with a front seat all the way back, an average-size adult can sit behind, with headroom sufficient for 6-footers." -- Consumer Guide (2019)

Interior Features

Standard features include a 6.5-inch touch screen, a four-speaker stereo, two USB ports, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

The touch screen features crisp graphics and responds quickly to inputs, and the physical controls for the climate and audio settings are arranged logically.

Available features include a six-speaker stereo, an eight-speaker BeatsAudio sound system, an 8-inch touch screen, wireless device charging, HD Radio, satellite radio, navigation, and VW's Digital Cockpit, a 10.25-inch display that replaces the more traditional gauge cluster.

Several active safety features are available, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

  • "The standard Apple CarPlay is well-integrated (Android Auto is also included), and we appreciate that VW includes physical menu buttons and proper volume/tuning knobs. All other controls are simple and nicely laid out." -- Autoblog
  • "Controls for audio, climate and the like are kept to a minimum and are easy to see and reach. All … Jetta models feature a central touch screen that handles infotainment. Lower trims use a 6.5-inch display, while higher ones have a better-looking 8-inch unit." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "Jetta also offers VW's latest-generation media system, which is fast, sharp and has graphics that are as good or better than any mainstream system out there. The screen technology also allows gesture control to pinch and zoom and bring up menus. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is standard on all models." -- Cars.com (2019)

Cargo

With 14.1 cubic feet of trunk room, the Jetta has a solid amount of cargo space for the compact car class. It comes standard with 60/40-split-folding rear seats, which makes it easier to load and carry large cargo.

  • Its 14.1-cubic-foot trunk is also wide and deep, though not quite as big as what you'd get in the Kia Forte or the Honda Civic." -- Autoblog
  • "The folding seats create a nice, wide pass-through." -- Edmunds (2019)
  • "At 14.1 cubic feet, the trunk is impressively large. Furthermore, standard 60/40-split rear seats add cargo-carrying practicality." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
