2016 Volkswagen Jetta Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.1

You won't find a hip design inside the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta. Instead there's bland styling and mediocre materials, making for a cabin that isn't as nice as those in some rivals, like the Honda Civic and Mazda3. Even so, you and your friends will be plenty comfortable in both rows of seats. Your back-seat passengers will especially appreciate how roomy it is back there. There's ample space in the trunk for a weekend's worth of luggage or a shopping trip with some friends. With optional Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the car can integrate all of your favorite smartphone apps to keep you connected on the go. According to crash testers, the Jetta will keep you safe in an accident, though the numerous optional collision avoidance features should help prevent a crash in the first place.

  • "Almost every compact sedan today features an eye-catching interior design with edgy shapes and a focus on the latest technology. The key word there is 'almost.' The Jetta's cabin, by contrast, is resolutely conservative in appearance, with materials ranging from glaringly spartan in lower trims (the dash and doors are covered with hard, shiny plastic, for instance) to merely adequate in upper trims (the dash adopts a soft-touch, low sheen material, but the door panels remain unyielding)." -- Edmunds
  • "Design-wise, the Jetta's interior could be called 'minimalist-chic.'" – Kelley Blue Book
  • It's still Teutonically austere and the door panels are hard plastic, but the dashboard looks far classier, dressed as it is with tunneled gauges and reflective piano-black trim panels." – Car and Driver (2015)

Seating and Cargo

The Jetta is a great compact car for you and up to four friends to pile into for weekend trips to the mall, thanks to its large trunk, comfortable front seats, and especially roomy back seats. The supportive front seats will help reduce driving fatigue, and your friends in the back won't complain, because they'll be riding in one of the most spacious rear seats in the class. The Jetta can be equipped with heated front seats to help keep you nice and warm, which is especially helpful if you live in a colder part of the country.

There's 15.5 cubic feet of cargo room in the trunk, which is more than most compact – and even some midsize – rivals offer, so you'll have plenty of room for luggage or shopping bags. The trunk has a wide opening so it's also very easy to load.

  • "The backseat dwarfs that of just about every other compact sedan and hatchback (including the Golf), and the remarkable 15.7-cubic-foot trunk is on par with bigger midsize sedans." -- Edmunds
  • "Especially notable is the amount of cargo space behind the rear seat. At 15.5 cubic feet, the sedan's trunk is in a higher league, and when you need even more room the rear seats fold." – Kelley Blue Book
  • "Front and rear seats in all test cars were comfy, legroom generous for a small car. " – USA Today (2015)

Interior Tech

You can stream music from your smartphone through the Jetta's standard infotainment system via Bluetooth, and you can answer calls without taking your hands off the wheel. If you opt for the available upgraded infotainment system, you'll get access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to fully integrate your smartphone's features with the car. Both infotainment systems are straightforward to use, especially the upgraded system, which makes connecting your phone a quick and painless task.

Satellite radio and a premium Fender audio system are also available if you love jamming to music while driving down the highway. Instead of fighting with your passenger over climate settings, buy a model with dual-zone automatic climate control so you can each set the temperature to your preferred level. The Jetta's physical controls on the dashboard, including those used for adjusting climate settings, are easy to reach and use.

  • "Advanced technology and a plethora of high-quality materials are laid out in a simple, easy-to-use format devoid of multiple buttons and overly complicated screens." – Kelley Blue Book
  • "The new standard touchscreen interface in the 2016 VW Jetta is one of the segment's best for smartphone integration." -- Edmunds
  • "The climate controls are very simple to operate and easy for driver or passenger to access." --Consumer Guide(2013)

Safety Tech

The Jetta gets excellent scores in crash tests, earning a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a Five-Star Overall Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Whether it's just you, a car load of friends, or your whole family, the Jetta should keep you safe in an accident. Hopefully that won't happen, though, thanks to the Jetta's long list of optional crash-avoidance systems. If you should end up too close to the car in front of you as you’re traveling down the road, the automatic emergency braking system will apply the brakes. Blind spot monitoring will alert you if a vehicle is traveling in one of your blind spots, so you won't attempt to change lanes. If you find yourself in an accident, the Jetta's Car-Net telematics system will automatically notify the authorities of the accident and allow you to make emergency calls or contact roadside assistance through the system.
