The Jetta SportWagen has either a five-cylinder base engine or a four-cylinder diesel engine. Both get good gas mileage. The base five-cylinder with an automatic transmission gets 22/30 mpg city/highway, while the diesel engine with an automatic transmission gets 30/42 mpg. Reviewers liked the high fuel economy of the diesel engine, but some thought it performs better at lower speeds and runs out of energy on the highway. Test drivers were impressed with the overall quality of the ride and handling, and some even said it is a little sporty.

Reviewers liked the high-quality interior of the five-seat 2010 Jetta SportWagen. They said the back seat is a bit cramped for adults, but that is a common problem in the wagon class. Cargo space behind the back seat is 32.8 cubic feet, which is good for the class. Standard features in the Jetta SportWagen include an eight-speaker sound system, eight-way manually-adjustable front seats and either leatherette or cloth upholstery. Features and amenities offered on higher trims or that were optional include a 10-speaker stereo system, six-disc CD changer, satellite radio, Bluetooth, navigation system with 30 GB hard drive and a media device interface.
