2020 Volkswagen GTI Interior Review

Interior: 8.2

The 2020 Volkswagen GTI has a top-notch interior. It's stylish, and plenty of quality materials give it a luxurious feel. The seats are comfortable and supportive, and cargo space is good for the class. Lots of features come standard, including an easy-to-use infotainment system.

  • "… the GTI offers a great, comfortable cabin with high-end materials and an upscale design." -- Autotrader
  • "The most impactful revisions in the 2018 GTI are found on the inside, where an optional large display combines with the already excellent interior to deliver an experience that competes with entry-level luxury vehicles." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "Volkswagen built a reputation for making German luxury interiors available at affordable prices, and the GTI lives up to expectations. Attractive and nicely trimmed, the cabin in our Autobahn trim level GTI looks and feels appropriate for a $32,000 car." -- Consumer Reports (2017)

This Volkswagen seats five and comes standard with cloth upholstery and heated front seats. Leather upholstery and a power-adjustable driver's seat are available.

The GTI's front seats are comfortable, and they have plenty of head- and legroom. It's also easy to find a suitable driving position. The rear seats also have ample space for adult passengers, and the large doors make entry and exit a breeze.

Installing child safety seats in a GTI is a relatively stress-free endeavor, as its LATCH hardware is easy to find and use. The back seat has two sets of lower anchors and three tether anchors.

  • "The seats are well-shaped and provide support to make long journeys less tiring. Rear passenger space is also good for a compact car, especially the headroom." -- Autotrader (2019)
  • "While small on the outside, it boasts a surprising amount of room within its 5-passenger interior. The front bucket seats are comfortable, though some of our editors would appreciate more lumbar support for the driver's seat. … With 35.6 inches of legroom, even the rear seat is impressive for its size." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "It's not until you get out of the GTI that you realize how small it actually is. The cabin feels large, and the tilt-and-telescoping action of the steering wheel allows tall drivers to get comfortable, too." -- Edmunds (2018)

Interior Features

Standard features in the GTI include a 6.5-inch touch screen, a six-speaker audio system, a USB-C port, Bluetooth, and VW's Car-Net App-Connect, which incorporates connectivity features like a Wi-Fi hot spot, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink.

The touch screen has sharp graphics, making it easy to see and read what's on the display. The interface is intuitive and doesn't have a steep learning curve, and physical controls are within easy reach of the driver.

Available features include a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, an 8-inch touch screen, a traditional USB port, an eight-speaker Fender audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, and navigation.

Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert. Available safety features include front and rear parking sensors, parallel and perpendicular park assist, adaptive cruise control, and lane keep assist.

  • "The new infotainment setup looks slick with a big central screen, hard buttons along the side and quick reactions to touch. It has a little sensor that knows when your hand is approaching, which pops up more on-screen controls." -- Autoweek (2018)
  • "The 2018 GTI gets a larger touchscreen display with improved graphics, viewing angles and response times. A full suite of available driver assistance features makes the GTI a full-fledged adult's car." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • " … our 8.0-inch version offered in SE and Autobahn trim is a welcome upgrade nonetheless. Its integration into the dash is seamless, and using it is intuitive enough that you'll finally reach for the dash instead of your iPhone. Features are quick to access and function fantastically, and the infotainment interface feels as natural to use as any modern smartphone." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)

The VW GTI provides 22.8 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 52.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. Those are good totals for a compact car, even compared to other hatchbacks in the class. There's additional storage space under the cargo floor. You can also use that space to keep your valuables out of sight.

  • "The real magic happens when you fold the rear seats. That expands the rear cargo space from 22.8 cubic feet with the rear seat up to an SUV-like 52.7 cubic feet of space." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
  • "There's 16.5 cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seats. Removing the parcel shelf/cargo cover increases that to 22.8 cubic feet. The rear seats don't fold completely flat but still yield almost 53 cubic feet of max cargo space — impressive and useful no matter how you slice it." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "A square, upright design means plenty of glass area with good sightlines to all quarters. And even though the GTI measures only 168 inches nose to tail, a 17.4 cubic foot cargo bay that's larger than any midsize sedan's trunk expands to a crossover-like 53.7 cu.-ft. with the rear seat folded (almost) flat. Under the cargo floor, you'll find more storage and a real mini-spare tire instead of some can of goo and an air pump that may or may not get you back on the road." -- New York Daily News (2018)
