2019 Volkswagen GTI Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.5

The 2019 Volkswagen GTI has one of the finest interiors in its class. Materials are high quality, there are plenty of standard features, and the seats are relaxing. The GTI also receives accolades for its sleek infotainment system and generous amount of cargo space.

  • "The most impactful revisions in the 2018 GTI are found on the inside, where an optional large display combines with the already excellent interior to deliver an experience that competes with entry-level luxury vehicles." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "Volkswagen built a reputation for making German luxury interiors available at affordable prices, and the GTI lives up to expectations. Attractive and nicely trimmed, the cabin in our Autobahn trim level GTI looks and feels appropriate for a $32,000 car." -- Consumer Reports (2017)
  • "Materials are well-grained and soft to the touch, and the overall design is distinctly European, comfortable and sporty. Bold red stitching throughout adds to the effect." -- Edmunds (2017)

Seating

The GTI is a comfortable ride, with ample space all-around and respectable seating adjustments for the driver and front passenger. The back seat is also roomy, and large doors make it easy to climb in and out of this zone.

The GTI comes standard with cloth upholstery, heated front seats that have manual adjustments, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Seating upgrades include leather upholstery and a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.

Caregivers will have a relatively stress-free time installing child safety seats in a GTI, as its LATCH hardware is easy to find and use. The back seat has two sets of lower anchors and three tether anchors.

  • "The seats are well-shaped and provide support to make long journeys less tiring. Rear passenger space is also good for a compact car, especially the headroom." -- Autotrader
  • "While small on the outside, its boasts a surprising amount of room within its 5-passenger interior. The front bucket seats are comfortable, though some of our editors would appreciate more lumbar support for the driver's seat. … With 35.6 inches of legroom, even the rear seat is impressive for its size." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "It's not until you get out of the GTI that you realize how small it actually is. The cabin feels large, and the tilt-and-telescoping action of the steering wheel allows tall drivers to get comfortable, too." -- Edmunds (2018)

Interior Features

Few infotainment systems receive as much praise as the GTI's. It's easy to learn and use, the touch screen is responsive, and controls are conveniently placed. The base system comes with a 6.5-inch touch-screen display, HD Radio, six speakers, Bluetooth, a USB port, and smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink. The upgraded system in the SE and Autobahn trim levels features an 8-inch touch screen and satellite radio, with a user-friendly navigation system added to the GTI Autobahn.

Other standard features in the GTI include ambient lighting, a rearview camera, an automatic post-collision braking system, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. In addition to the upgraded infotainment system, optional features such as dual-zone automatic climate control, a sunroof, a proximity key, push-button start, and a Fender premium audio system are available.

  • "The new infotainment setup looks slick with a big central screen, hard buttons along the side and quick reactions to touch. It has a little sensor that knows when your hand is approaching, which pops up more on-screen controls. The digital cockpit … works well too, with clean, easy-to-read info and cool graphics around the tach. Whatever model you get, we'd say spring for the new stuff. It makes this car feel damn near futuristic, years ahead of the last one." -- Autoweek (2018)
  • "The 2018 GTI gets a larger touchscreen display with improved graphics, viewing angles and response times. A full suite of available driver assistance features makes the GTI a full-fledged adult's car." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • " … our 8.0-inch version offered in SE and Autobahn trim is a welcome upgrade nonetheless. Its integration into the dash is seamless, and using it is intuitive enough that you'll finally reach for the dash instead of your iPhone. Features are quick to access and function fantastically, and the infotainment interface feels as natural to use as any modern smartphone." -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)

Cargo

You can load more things into the back of a GTI than you can in most other compact cars. It has up to 22.8 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. You can fold down the rear seats to open up a 52.7-cubic-foot cargo hold, and there is additional storage underneath the cargo floor.

  • "The real magic happens when you fold the rear seats. That expands the rear cargo space from 22.8 cubic feet with the rear seat up to an SUV-like 52.7 cubic feet of space." -- Kelley Blue Book
  • "There's 16.5 cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seats. Removing the parcel shelf/cargo cover increases that to 22.8 cubic feet. The rear seats don't fold completely flat but still yield almost 53 cubic feet of max cargo space — impressive and useful no matter how you slice it." -- Edmunds (2018)
  • "A square, upright design means plenty of glass area with good sightlines to all quarters. And even though the GTI measures only 168 inches nose to tail, a 17.4 cubic foot cargo bay that's larger than any midsize sedan's trunk expands to a crossover-like 53.7 cu.-ft. with the rear seat folded (almost) flat. Under the cargo floor, you'll find more storage and a real mini-spare tire instead of some can of goo and an air pump that may or may not get you back on the road." -- New York Daily News (2018)
