2010 Volkswagen Golf Review

The 2010 Volkswagen Golf’s available diesel engine, engaging performance and quality, spacious interior put it a notch above many competitors.

Pros & Cons

  • Well-made interior
  • Comfortable front and rear seats
  • Engaging performance
  • Plenty of cargo space
  • Limited standard features

2010 Volkswagen Golf Overview

Volkswagen Golf models from 2010 with diesel engines are part of the massive Volkswagen recall because they do not meet U.S. emissions standards. Volkswagen will contact owners when they have remedied the problem and will fix the cars for free. The cars are safe to drive. Read more on the Volkswagen diesel recalls

The 2010 Volkswagen Golf is a hatchback available with two or four doors. Reviewers said that regardless of which model you choose, both the front and rear seats are comfortable, which is a big compliment for a small car. The Golf also has good cargo space.

Test drivers said the Golf’s high-quality interior wouldn’t look out of place on a more expensive car. The base Golf has an eight-speaker stereo, cruise control and power windows and door locks. The Golf TDI, which has a diesel engine, comes with a touch-screen eight-speaker stereo with satellite radio and a USB port. Navigation and an upgraded stereo were optional on TDI models, and Bluetooth was optional on all models. In addition to its high-quality cabin and many interior features, the base Golf has a lot of safety equipment and above-average crash test scores.

If you want great fuel economy, reviewers liked the Golf TDI’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine that averages 30/42 mpg city/highway. But car reviewers fell in love with the power from the base Golf’s five-cylinder engine. The downside of that power is that its fuel economy, at 23/20 mpg city/highway, isn’t great for the class.

Other Cars to Consider

Like the Golf, the 2010 Mini Cooper also gets good marks for its performance, though the Cooper has an edge with its high fuel economy ratings. You can get the Cooper in hatchback or convertible body styles. Note that the Mini Cooper is much smaller than the Golf, has less cargo space and only seats four. The base Cooper has good handling, but for more power, car reviewers suggested the Cooper S and John Cooper Works models.

The 2010 Mazda3 is also fun to drive. Along with good performance, the Mazda3 has a quality interior, but it also has a back seat that’s not as comfortable as the Golf’s. The Mazda3’s safety scores are slightly better than the Golf’s. With the Mazda3, you also have the choice between a sedan and hatchback.
