2018 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Interior Review

Interior: 8.2

The 2018 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen has a well-equipped interior that looks great and features mostly high-quality materials. Alltrack models have some unique styling touches that are well-received, though they also have some aluminum-looking trim that not everyone likes. The seats are terrific, offering plenty of space and comfort in both rows. The cargo hold is also roomy, with above-average overall capacity. An intuitive infotainment system headlines the features list, but the touch screen responds slowly to inputs.

  • "Like the rest of the current-generation Golf family, the 2017 Golf SportWagen gets high marks for its interior. Materials use and fit and finish all look like they're from a higher class of car." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "Alltrack gets special interior trim as well, including aluminum-look pedals and distinctive leatherette upholstery." -- Consumer Guide (2017)
  • Materials on the Alltrack's doors and dash are quite good, although we're not huge fans of the fake aluminum trim. Things get a little lower rent the farther you move back, with the Alltrack's rear doors employing hard plastics that aren't as pleasing to the touch." -- Left Lane News (2017)

The SportWagen seats five on cloth upholstery. Leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, and power-adjustable front seats are available. The Golf Alltrack comes standard with leatherette upholstery and heated front seats.

The front seats are supportive and comfortable. They will keep you in place around turns, thanks to their side bolstering. The rear seats are spacious, providing enough head- and legroom for tall adults to ride comfortably.

The SportWagen has a full set of LATCH child-seat connectors in the rear outboard seats and one tether anchor in the rear middle seat. The tether anchors are hard to find and easily confused with other hardware. The lower anchors are tough to maneuver around but have few other issues.

  • "Inside the seats are easily best-in-class. Volkswagen already does this very well, and all its cars default with ample side support during sportier driving, which is atypical for a midsize $25- to $30,000 crossover." -- Autoblog (2017)
  • "Comfortable seating includes the rear seats, which offer decent legroom and headroom, even for taller passengers." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "The [Alltrack] seating is comfortable as well, with ample legroom and standard leatherette throughout the cabin." -- Autotrader (2017)

Interior Features

Standard features in the Golf SportWagen include an eight-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, a USB port, a rearview camera, and a 6.5-inch touch-screen infotainment system with smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink.

Available features include a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, navigation, a Fender premium audio system, satellite radio, an upgraded infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection.

The Golf Alltrack has the same standard and optional features, but it's also available with adaptive headlights, lane departure warning, and parallel park assist.

The SportWagen's dash controls are well-organized and easy to reach, and they nicely complement the touch-screen infotainment system. The touch screen is generally user-friendly as well, and it magnifies the buttons when it detects an approaching hand. The screen’s lone issue is that its response times are more in line with the tortoise than the hare.

  • Volkswagen's touchscreen infotainment system is attractive, easy to use, and now offers important features as standard, but it's also s-l-o-w." -- Car and Driver
  • "Golf's great buttons-and-knobs control layout is joined by standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink cell-phone integration." -- Consumer Guide (2017)
  • "A backup camera is also standard and is hidden beneath the rear hatch VW logo, pivoting the badge out of the way when you put the car in reverse, and then disappearing like a scared groundhog into its cubby when you switch to a forward gear. This may seem overly complex but it's a good thing, since it prevents the camera lens from getting covered with grime." -- Autoblog (2017)

The Golf SportWagen has 30.4 cubic feet of cargo room with the rear seats up and 66.5 cubic feet with them folded down. These aren't the highest totals in the class, but many other wagons provide less space. Notably, the rear seats fold almost completely flat, giving you a load floor that's fairly easy to slide things onto. There's also an under-floor storage compartment, which comes in handy when you want to keep your goods out of sight.

  • "The second-row seats fold nearly flat in a one-handed, one-step motion. There's a slight slope to the floor even with the seats fully folded, but that didn't stop us from loading 20 carry-on bags into the space behind the front seats. Perhaps more impressive is that we fit nine bags behind the second row, more than twice as many as fit in the cargo hold of a Kia Soul and more than any other car tested here except the Subaru Outback." -- Car and Driver
  • "The 2017 Alltrack boasts over 30 cubic feet of room with the rear seats up, and 66.5 with them folded. That's more than some small SUVs, including Volkswagen's own Tiguan." -- Kelley Blue Book (2017)
  • "The rear of the Alltrack features a robust 30.4 cu ft. of space behind the rear seats and a whopping 66.5 cu ft. with the rear seats folded down. If that's not enough space for your gear, the standard roof racks allow for even more capacity. Given the fairly low roof height of 59.7 inches, loading and unloading kayaks or other gear to and from the roof rack should be no problem for most average-sized adults." -- Autotrader (2017)
