2014 Volkswagen CC Overview

Is the 2014 Volkswagen CC a Good Used Car?

The 2014 Volkswagen CC is a decent used luxury midsize sedan. Its engine could use more power, but its handling is good. Similarly, its interior is nice, but a sloping roofline deprives the CC of headroom. Overall, it’s just not quite as good as its competitors.

Used 2014 Volkswagen CC Performance and Interior

The front-wheel-drive 2014 VW CC comes standard with a 200-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. A 280-horsepower V6 is standard in the V6 Executive 4Motion (the only trim with all-wheel drive). A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a six-speed automatic transmission is available. The Volkswagen CC balances a comfortable ride with agile handling. The sport-tuned suspension is firm but composed on rough pavement. Alloy wheels are standard in all CC models.

The turbocharged engines with the manual transmission earn an EPA fuel economy rating of 21 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, which is good for an upscale midsize car. All-wheel-drive V6 models get 17/25 mpg city/highway.

The four-door 2014 Volkswagen CC seats five in two rows. Base models come with leatherette upholstery and heated 12-way power-adjustable front seats, while leather seats are standard in the Volkswagen Executive CC trim. The CC’s leatherette seats feel nicer than the leather found in some rivals. The V6 Executive 4Motion trim includes ventilated front seats and a massaging driver’s seat. The front seats are comfortable, but rear legroom is tight for a luxury midsize sedan. Rear headroom is compromised by the CC’s sloping roof line. There are two complete sets of LATCH child-seat connectors on the CC’s outboard rear seats and a middle-seat tether anchor.

Standard equipment in the CC includes dual-zone automatic climate control, a 5-inch touch-screen navigation system, and Bluetooth phone and audio streaming. Some models have a 6.5-inch touch-screen navigation system and a 10-speaker Dynaudio premium sound system. Operating the infotainment system is easy thanks to simple controls and large buttons and dials.

How Safe Is the CC?

The 2014 Volkswagen CC earned four stars in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s rollover test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the CC the highest rating of Good rating in four tests: moderate overlap front, rear crash, side, and roof strength. The CC received the second-lowest score of Marginal in the small overlap front crash test.

A rearview camera comes standard, though some Sport and R-Line models will not have it; it became available after the start of the model year. Front and rear parking sensors are standard in the top V6 Executive 4Motion trim.

Should I Consider Another Used CC?

The 2014 CC was the sixth model year of the sedan’s first generation. You can save money by purchasing the similar 2013 CC, but you’ll miss out on the standard rearview camera and navigation system introduced for 2014, as well as a few other available add-ons. Models made prior to 2013 have a different exterior design.

Which Used Volkswagen CC Is Right for Me?

The 2014 Volkswagen CC is available in four trims: Sport, R-Line, Executive, and V6 Executive 4Motion. The entry-level Sport trim is well-equipped with features like dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, heated 12-way power-adjustable front sport seats, navigation, a rearview camera, and more. The Volkswagen CC R-Line adds items like sport bumpers, side skirts, and 18-inch wheels. The Executive trim has leather seating surfaces with driver's seat memory function, a navigation system with a 6.5-inch touch screen, keyless access with push-button start, and trunk access. The top-of-the-line V6 Executive 4Motion has cooled front seats with massage function, as well as front and rear parking sensors. The Sport trim is equipped well enough for most buyers, unless they have a desire for the V6 Executive 4Motion’s more potent 280-horsepower engine.

Even with the CC’s average reliability, you might want to consider a certified pre-owned model for added peace of mind. Volkswagen provides a two-year/24,000-mile limited warranty on all of its certified pre-owned vehicles. Each CPO Volkswagen must pass a 160-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Volkswagen warranty page carefully.

2014 Volkswagen CC and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Volkswagen CC or 2014 BMW 5 Series?

The 2014 BMW 5 Series is more of a sports sedan than the CC. The BMW has controlled handling and delivers strong acceleration regardless of the engine choice. The 5 Series also has a more comfortable interior than the CC – especially in the rear, where two six-footers can sit easily. Both models have average reliability. Unless you want the 5 Series’ additional power, the Volkswagen is the better choice because its estimated ownership costs are considerably less.

Which Is Better: 2014 Volkswagen CC or 2014 Acura TL?

The 2014 Acura TL has a more powerful base V6 engine than the CC’s turbocharged four-cylinder, as well as lively handling and precise steering. The Acura’s interior has more shoulder room but even less rear legroom than the Volkswagen. Both luxury midsize sedans are well-regarded for the materials and items that populate their interiors. What makes the TL the better choice is its great reliability rating and strong safety scores from the NHTSA and IIHS.
