Test drivers said the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle’s base five-cylinder engine provides adequate power on the highway, but some said that it can be noisy. They preferred the available engines, which include a turbodiesel four-cylinder engine in the Beetle TDI and the Beetle Turbo’s more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine. A manual transmission is standard regardless of which model you choose. An automatic transmission is available with the base Beetle, while the Beetle Turbo and Beetle TDI are available with an automated manual transmission. The base 2013 Beetle gets an EPA-estimated 22/31 mpg city/highway, which is poor for the class. However, the Beetle TDI achieves a very impressive 28/41 mpg. Auto writers said the VW Beetle has direct steering, strong brakes and corners reasonably well. The Turbo model is the most agile, they noted, though some said it’s not as athletic as rivals like the 2013 Mini Cooper S. Most test drivers agreed that all Beetle models offer a composed ride that absorbs road imperfections.

Auto writers said the 2013 VW Beetle’s cabin is attractively designed, and features retro styling and quality materials. They reported that there’s ample headroom in the front seats, and some wrote that the back seat is fairly roomy. The 2013 Beetle seats four and is available as a two-door hatchback or a convertible. The hatchback can haul up to 29.9 cubic feet of cargo, which is slightly less than the cargo space of many subcompact rivals. The VW Beetle comes standard with heated front seats, which are rarely standard in this class, as well as Bluetooth, an eight-speaker audio system with an iPod interface and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Available features include a panoramic sunroof, push-button start, satellite radio, a Fender audio system and navigation. Test drivers praised the available Fender stereo’s sound quality and said that the navigation system is easy to use.
