2020 Volkswagen Atlas Interior Review

Scorecard

Interior: 8.5

The 2020 Volkswagen Atlas features mostly high-quality cabin materials, though some surfaces in the rear are less upscale. There's an abundance of space inside its quiet cabin, even in the third row. The Atlas also has one of the largest cargo areas in the midsize SUV class. It offers a long list of standard technology features, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the upgraded VW Car-Net service, which includes a Wi-Fi hot spot and several mobile connectivity functions.

  • "Those in the front will see cabin materials that are almost premium quality, while the kids behind get the less classy stuff that's harder to damage and capable of taking more punishment." -- Autotrader
  • "Cabin ambience may seem rather drab and straightlaced at first glance, but the material quality and feel of the switches, cubbies, and bins are at least on par with competitors in terms of their fit and finish." -- Consumer Reports
  • "An almost-Audi-like elegant simplicity to the cabin gives the 2019 VW Atlas an upscale atmosphere." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)

Seating

The standard three-row Atlas has seating for seven people, while the two-row Atlas Cross Sport seats five people in two rows.

The three-row model offers plenty of space. Even the third row can accommodate a pair of long-legged adults, which is a rare feat in this class. You can also slide the second row backward and forward for more space. The front seats are supportive, and their high position creates great visibility for the driver. Additionally, the cabin is exceptionally quiet, keeping wind and road noise at bay.

For securing child safety seats, there are three complete sets of LATCH connectors for the Atlas’ second row, as well as two upper tethers for the third-row outboard seats. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this system the second-worst rating of Marginal for ease of use. The lower anchors are set deep in the seats, and too much force is needed to attach the car-seat straps.

  • "Third-row seating in many crossovers is a cramped and awkwardly-accessed affair. Not in the Atlas. There are more than 33 inches of legroom in the back seat, which is remarkable. It isn't just for kids back there -- even a couple of lanky teenagers will find it bearable." -- Autotrader
  • "Family-friendly interior space, a straightforward layout of its controls, and an overabundance of cupholders make the Atlas a practical choice, even among other highly practical rivals. Plus, a third row of seats that can comfortably accommodate real live adults is an impressive selling feature." -- Car and Driver
  • "Inside the sumptuous cabin are supportive front seats, limousinelike middle seats, and an adult-worthy third row. Plus, the interior is highly versatile -- moving the second row forward and back takes little effort, and it's easy to fold down all rear seats." -- Consumer Reports

Interior Features

Standard features in the Atlas include a 6.5-inch touch screen, Mirror Link, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, a USB port, and VW’s next-generation Car-Net service with a Wi-Fi hot spot.

Options include an 8-inch touch screen, voice recognition, navigation, the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit with a 12.3-inch display, HD Radio, satellite radio, a 12-speaker Fender premium stereo, and three extra USB ports.

The Atlas earns praise for its abundance of user-friendly technology. The infotainment controls are clearly labeled and easy to use. The available VW Digital Cockpit is located behind the steering wheel and allows drivers to quickly see navigation, climate settings, and more. You can also customize this system.

For 2020, VW introduces a new iteration of its Car-Net service. This system allows you to use a mobile app to remotely interact with your vehicle, allowing you to start, stop, lock, and unlock it from a distance. It also features vehicle maintenance reports and a Wi-Fi hot spot, and it can help you locate a parking spot or your last parked location.

Standard safety features include a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, a post-collision braking system, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

Available safety features include front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view parking camera system, parallel park assist, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights.

  • "No matter which trim you choose, the Atlas comes well connected and ready to entertain. The touchscreen interface is intuitive and about as responsive as an average smartphone." -- Car and Driver
  • "And as a public announcement to all manufacturers -- The Atlas' controls are a model of clarity, particularly the intuitive touch-screen infotainment system, which is straightforward to use, has a clear display and offers big buttons and text. Radio presets are always displayed and you even get rotary volume and tuning knobs." -- Consumer Reports
  • "And there's the digital cockpit … which replaces the standard gauge cluster. This all-digital 12.3-inch display lets you customize your display and provides excellent visibility.” -- Kelley Blue Book (2018)

Cargo

The Atlas has one of the largest cargo capacities in the midsize SUV class, with 20.6 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 55.5 cubic feet behind the second row, and 96.8 cubic feet with both rear rows folded.

It’s a breeze to load items into the rear of this SUV, thanks to its flat cargo floor. There are also plenty of places to stash items in the cabin. A power liftgate and a hands-free liftgate are available.

  • "In our carry-on-luggage testing, the Atlas impressed us by tying with the enormous Honda Pilot. We fit four of our carry-on suitcases behind the third row of seats and 38 when we folded the second and third rows." -- Car and Driver
  • "An optional power liftgate is available along with a hands-free feature. When folding all seats, the Atlas reveals an enormous cargo volume of over 50 cubic feet in our measurement. Loading cargo is easy thanks to the flat, uninterrupted cargo floor. Plastic partitions that velcro into the cargo mat can hold items in place." -- Consumer Reports
  • "In the basic Atlas, the two rearward rows of seats will fold to create a flat load-space floor. Behind the third row is a still-generous 20.6 cubic feet of cargo area, which expands to an impressive maximum of 96.8 cubic feet." -- Kelley Blue Book (2019)
