Good Headlights Are a Key Safety Feature

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) includes headlight ratings in its vehicle safety evaluations. It tests both low beam and high beam headlights to measure how far they illuminate the road on straightaways and around gradual and sharp curves.

IIHS’ headlight ratings, from best to worst, are: Good, Acceptable, Marginal, and Poor. For a car to qualify as an IIHS 2020 Top Safety Pick+, it must have Good or Acceptable headlights.

We’ve searched the IIHS’ 2020 Top Safety Pick+ award winners to find out which cars earned a Good headlight rating. All the cars featured in this slideshow earn a Good headlight rating for at least their standard headlights. This means the top-performing headlights come on the base trim.

Of the 10 cars that made the list, only six brands are represented, and only one car comes from a U.S. automaker: The Tesla Model 3. Audi, Mazda, and Subaru each have two entries, which leaves Acura and Lexus to complete the list.

Many other vehicles earn an IIHS 2020 Top Safety Pick+ designation, but they either received an Acceptable headlight rating, or their Good headlight rating only applies to headlights that come on a select trim above the base model or as part of a package.
