Which Used Sonata Is Right For You?

The Hyundai Sonata has come a long way since it was introduced to North America in 1985.  Then, it was so plagued with problems that it prompted the Korean manufacturer to issue an unprecedented ten-year warranty. That was triple or more what was offered by any other car manufacturer, forcing the rest of the industry to ramp up warranties, benefitting us all.

Since that seriously flawed first model, the Sonata has been redesigned from the wheels up every four or five years and has become Hyundai’s best-selling model, consistently rated a best buy for its good looks, reliability, affordability, resale value, and fuel economy.

The Sonata line now includes a well-regarded hybrid, which is second in sales to the Toyota Prius, the best-selling hybrid on the planet, and a new plug-in hybrid currently available only in California.  The plug-in has an impressive 99 mpg-equivalent rating, comparable to pure EV models.

The 2016 model was a finalist for the prestigious Green Car of the Year award, given annually at the Los Angeles Auto Show, which recognizes eco-friendly design leadership.  Since it’s too soon for 2016 Sonatas to be widely available for sale used, let’s look at models from 2009 to 2015, including the Sonata Hybrid which was introduced in 2011.
