Which Used Ford Ranger Is Best for You?

The Ford Ranger enjoyed 29 years of production in the United States. It debuted in 1983, and the last U.S. built Ford Ranger came off the St. Paul, Minnesota assembly line in December of 2011. However, the Ranger is alive and well in other parts of the world and Ford has plans to bring it back to the U.S. for the 2019 model year, due to the current success of the compact pickup truck segment.

The Ranger was America’s best-selling compact truck for many years, and it changed very little over that time period. A second-generation model was introduced in 1993, and Ford constructed a new frame and suspension system for the Ranger in 1998. A few body morphs, facelifts, and periodic cosmetic changes took place throughout the 2000s. But all-in-all, the Spartan Ranger stayed true to its roots. This is part of the reason for its demise, as critics called the last several model years “outdated” and “lagging behind” in the class.

The Ranger is not known for consistent safety ratings. Less-than-perfect safety scores riddled the vehicle many times throughout its life cycle. However, critics agreed that it is useful for off-roading, as well as light hauling and towing. The very affordable Ranger offers the rugged ride and basic, straightforward interior of a traditional truck. It is also very reliable and fuel-efficient.

Some model years fared better than others in various areas. Trims, engine options, and features changed from year to year, making it difficult to choose the best model to match your priorities. With the help of U.S. News scoring data, and other reputable sources, we put together a guide to make it easier for you to find the best used Ford Ranger.

Although our reviews only cover model years 2007-2011, this slideshow covers the Ford Ranger from 2004-2011. Read on to learn which Ranger best meets your needs.
