2014 Toyota Yaris Overview

Is the 2014 Toyota Yaris a Good Used Car?

The 2014 Toyota Yaris is a solid choice in the subcompact car class. It has one of the lowest ownership costs among rivals, due in part to a superb reliability rating. Above-average safety scores and good fuel economy estimates broaden its appeal. However, its weak engine, dated transmission, and humdrum interior leave much to be desired.

Used 2014 Toyota Yaris Performance and Interior

The 2014 Yaris is equipped with a 106-horsepower four-cylinder engine. That’s enough power for driving around town, but the engine strains to get up to highway speeds. The standard five-speed manual transmission is responsive, but models with a four-speed automatic have weaker acceleration. Competitors with five- and six-speed automatics have swifter acceleration. The Yaris definitely isn’t a corner carver like the Ford Fiesta, but its small size coupled with its tight steering and capable suspension give is solid handling. This Toyota delivers very strong mileage estimates of 30 mpg in the city and 35-36 mpg on the highway.

The Yaris is a two-door hatchback that seats five in two rows of seats. Some models come with four doors. The interior is nicely arranged, but hard plastics and low-grade upholstery are found throughout the cabin. The front seats sit up high, which means visibility is good. Still, the lack of a telescoping steering wheel could make it difficult to find a suitable driving position. There’s a good amount of head- and legroom in both rows, and audio and climate controls are user friendly. The Yaris doesn’t offer an infotainment system or navigation. There are two sets of LATCH car-seat connectors on the rear outboard seats and an upper tether anchor on the rear middle seat.

Standard features include satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth, a USB port, and a six-speaker audio system. Some models have cruise control, keyless entry, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, and a sport-tuned suspension.

How Reliable Is the 2014 Toyota Yaris?

How Safe Is the Yaris?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the four-door Yaris four out of five stars in the frontal and rollover tests and five stars in the side crash test. These scores earned the Yaris an overall rating of four stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the four-door Yaris the highest rating of Good in four crash tests and a Marginal rating in the fifth (the small overlap front crash).

This Toyota doesn’t have any active safety features. Rivals like the Nissan Versa offer a rearview camera.

Should I Consider Another Used Yaris?

The 2014 Toyota Yaris is part of a generation that started in 2012 and includes the 2018 model year. Other than the addition of standard daytime running lights, the Yaris was mostly unchanged for 2014. You could save money by choosing an older model, without sacrificing many features. You may want to consider a newer model as well, as the 2015 Yaris had quite a few updates. These included the addition of a standard infotainment system, an upgraded suspension system, and updated interior and exterior styling.

Which Used Toyota Yaris Is Right for Me?

The 2014 Toyota Yaris comes in three trim levels: L, LE, and SE (four-door only). The base L trim has enough features for the average shopper, and the LE trim doesn’t add enough to make it a worthwhile investment. SE models are good if you’re looking for something sportier; they add a sport-tuned suspension, alloy wheels, and unique interior and exterior styling.

The Yaris is one of the most reliable subcompact cars available, but you still might want to consider a certified pre-owned vehicle for added peace of mind. Toyota provides a one-year/12,000-mile limited warranty on all of its certified pre-owned vehicles, and it extends the original new-car powertrain warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles. Each CPO Toyota must pass a 160-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing and roadside assistance may be available, so read the Toyota warranty page carefully.

2014 Toyota Yaris and Other Cars to Consider

Which Is Better: 2014 Toyota Yaris or 2014 Ford Fiesta?

The 2014 Ford Fiesta has one main vice: one of the lowest reliability scores in the class. On all other fronts, however, it outranks the Yaris. If you’re looking for good performance out of a subcompact car, you can’t get much better than the Fiesta. Not to mention, it has a polished interior with tasteful styling. The Yaris has more room in the second row and increased cargo capacity, but some Fiesta models come with a rearview camera, push-button start, a touch-screen infotainment system, and navigation. None of these features are found in the Yaris. If you need a day-to-day vehicle that’s dependable and spacious, the Yaris is your best bet. Otherwise, you’ll have more fun driving the Fiesta.

Which Is Better: 2014 Toyota Yaris or 2014 Toyota Corolla?

The 2014 Toyota Corolla doesn't have the highest ranking in the highly competitive compact car class, but it’s still a very good car. Just like the Yaris, the Corolla has a high reliability rating and a comfortable ride, but it suffers when it comes to performance. It packs enough power for everyday driving, but its steering isn't the most responsive. While the Corolla has more passenger space, the Yaris has a larger trunk. These cars are neck and neck; your choice really comes down to how much space you need. If you don’t need the extra room, go with the Yaris. You’ll save money while doing so. Otherwise, the Corolla is better suited for you.

Which Is Better: 2014 Toyota Yaris or 2014 Nissan Versa?

The 2014 Nissan Versa doesn’t rank very high in the subcompact car class. Its performance, interior, and reliability scores are subpar at best. It’s not all bad, though. Some Versa models have features not found in any Yaris model, such as a rearview camera and push-button start. The Versa also gets better fuel economy than the Yaris thanks to its continuously variable transmission. Still, the Yaris is the better car overall.
