2012 Toyota Yaris Review

While the 2012 Toyota Yaris has comfortable front seats, reviewers said that some competing small cars are more fun to drive.

Pros & Cons

  • Comfortable front seats
  • Forgettable driving dynamics

2012 Toyota Yaris Overview

The 2012 Yaris received lackluster performance reviews from critics, who said that its four-cylinder engine is sufficient, but otherwise very forgettable. Some also thought that the available five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions are dated in comparison with the six-speed units found in many rivals. The Yaris achieves up to 30/38 mpg city/highway, which is fairly good for the class. some reviewers said the Yaris’ steering is direct and communicative, but most didn’t comment on the Yaris’ overall handling.

The Yaris is available as a two-door or four-door hatchback. Some reviewers noted that the quality of the materials used inside the Yaris isn’t as good as those found in some rivals. Most test drivers found plenty of room and comfort in the front seats, though some commented that the back seat is too narrow to seat three comfortably, which is common in this class. The Yaris comes standard with a four-speaker stereo with a USB port and an auxiliary jack. Power windows are not standard on the base model, but they are available. Other available features include cruise control, keyless entry, an upgraded stereo, Bluetooth, HD Radio and satellite radio. The four-door Yaris has 15.6 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats (15.3 in two-door models), which is slightly less than what some competing hatchbacks offer.
