2011 Toyota Yaris Review

By U.S. News Best Cars Staff December 29, 2015

With excellent fuel economy ratings and, lots of standard safety features, the 2011 Toyota Yaris is a smart choice for shoppers who want a small commuter car, though some rivals offer more interior refinement and better safety scores.

The 2011 Toyota Yaris is designed for drivers who want an inexpensive sedan or hatchback with good fuel economy. The Yaris has a standard 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Reviewers said it isn’t very powerful, but is good enough for traveling around town. With the standard manual transmission, it averages 29/36 mpg city/highway.

As one of the smaller models in the class, the Yaris doesn’t have expansive passenger space. Reviewers said tall adults will find legroom in the front and back seats cramped. For a subcompact, the Yaris sedan has a lot of trunk space, but the Yaris hatchback has less cargo room than some competitors.

The Yaris has safety features like electronic stability and traction control, which some competitors don’t have. But the Yaris’ list of standard interior features is short. It has air conditioning, but base sedan and hatchback models will not have a stereo with an auxiliary port unless they also have the Convenience Package. Models with the Power and Sport packages add power windows and door locks, remote keyless entry and iPod connectivity.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2011 Mazda2 is a small hatchback that reviewers preferred over the Yaris. The Mazda2’s fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine doesn’t make much horsepower, but car reviewers said its small frame and crisp handling make it really run to drive. The Mazda2 has comfortable seats for its size and more cargo space than the Yaris hatchback. The Mazda2 also comes with better crash test ratings. The Mazda2’s main drawbacks are that it doesn’t offer as many tech features as competitors.

The 2011 Ford Focus sedan has more available interior and safety features than the Yaris, including Ford’s voice-activated Sync infotainment system, and a safety feature called MyKey, which helps parents set limits on teen drivers. Like the Yaris, the Ford Focus makes a good errand runner, and it gets good fuel economy ratings for the class. While seat space in the Focus is about average, it has about as much cargo space as the Yaris sedan. It also carries better safety ratings.
